Cooling grow room

Hey guys it's my first grow, I have a 2x4 tent 4 plants 3gl cloth pots soil with a 400w hps air cooled hood 5 inch fan (intend to move to LED once I'm happy I can grow decent and it's worth while for the cost). And a 4 inch carbon filter with fan. 2 circulation fans and a humidifier.

I have the 5 inch in front of the hood pushing air in and through and out but the inlet is only by the bottom of an open window, out let on top of tent pointed at top of window,

Carbon filter is setup inside tent with fan after pulling air from the tent then out, outlet on top of then pointing at the window.

I'm having trouble with heat still hitting 32c. I also need the hood going through a filter too, cant have the smell. I'm thinking of putting the fans in line keep the 5 inch where it is, get a t section of ducting for airflow and smell. Connect it just before the tent outlet then run out the tent to a reducer section into the 4 inch fan straight into the carbon filter.

My thinking is that by the time the air has got to the filter from the 5 inch it will have slowed down considerably and the 4 inch will give it enough to push it though,

Maybe other way 4 inch into hood to t section to 5 in and then filter to compensate for opening in t section?

What if you hooked that filter duct to the hood, and pulled air through the filter, through the hood, and out the tent? The air would be smell-filtered, help cool the bulb, and pull the hot air from the tent at the same time. Vent this outside. Then you can use your other fan with the duct as an intake fan to pull in fresh cool lung room air.

But at the moment the 5 inch is pushing cooler air from outside the tent over the bulb and hot air out, I'd imagine that would cool the bulb best and there are some gaps in the hood that I'm sure the smell would get through, I know I'll never totally eliminate it. I could maybe buy a fan for intake but the rooms sitting at 27c already,

You can't stack fans in a line like that.
The slowest cfm fan will restrict the other one.

What brand fans are you using?

The one attached to the duct looks like it might not be fit for purpose.


The way I'd do it is a 6" fan pulling through the hood and the filter on the other end of the hood.

It's not hard to seal all joins of the hood with aluminium tape or electricians tape.

Putting that aside, if your ambient temp is high in the room then you are going to have to use a lot more air exchange.

But if your not getting that heat right out of the room completely then you will still struggle.

Yeah I've changed the setup around to what you suggested, I'll check temps over the next few days. It's only a short term problem, I live in Scotland so wont be that warm for long

It's just a swift air fan I got from the guy I bought it from, prob not that great like 200 or 300 cfm or what ever its called

Apart from the temps I'm pretty pleased with the girls, some light lst and topping to get an event canopy then plan on scrog

Yeah I thought I recognised the fan, not good for the job, can't handle the resistance.

Anyway I'm sure itl all come together.

If I cant stack fans would it work if I used a y connection and had 1 on each end of the y pushing into the single pipe?

It might work, but it's not practical.

You just need a fan that's made for the job.
You can pick them up for peanuts on ebay second hand if your skint.

Filter>fan>hood>duct out>>>>

Ok fair enough, I just would have rather not spent more money on it atm. In the long run growing will save me money but the initial set up cost is expensive to me.

Just same style like a can from black orchid but 4 inches it came with the filter from the guy too but he had it out in a shed, high heat wasn't a problem for him, he had heaters which he gave me too but are no use to me lol.

It's not a problem just would have rather not had to buy a new exhaust set up.

Changing the layout around to what was suggested has brought it down a couple of degrees, so at 30

Or I might be better getting a cooler for the room, will make my bedroom more comfortable too. I will need to upgrade the exhaust system though as it's only 4 inches atm

Well, a good airflow would solve the heating issue, you basically need to cool it down like 4-5 degrees and that's it, so perhaps a few fans? Ideally just a blow fan
