Harvesting in stages

I’m giving a two stage harvest a go for the first time, I cut all the top layer off and am letting the bottom go for a while longer to see what happens.
For those who like to do it this way, what can I expect? The lighter coloured flower to gain some colour? Buds to firm up a bit more? Would I be looking at another few weeks or so?
Would they be more prone to mould after such heavy pruning?

I often harvest in two stages. I have had people prefer the second harvest over the first, so it’s definitely not a bad thing. The second set of buds will darken and fatten up, give them a couple extra weeks and see how they look. I think the risk of mold is minimized since there is more airflow around the remaining buds so long as no mold has already started.

I sometimes harvest in two stages, the first stage goes in the Cannatrol and the second stage gets pollinated immediately and left to make mature seeds. I usually take a cutting of a plant before moving it to the flower cycle and by the time the plant is in the middle of flower cycle I reverse the cutting that is now rooted and in veg mode. Reversal takes around 21 days so I do that roughly three weeks before chop. Then I can pollinate the remaining lower buds in the pollination room and essentially move the pot to my balcony to finish growing the seeds.

Thanks HookD, that is the info I needed.

I harvest in stages. I label the each lot as early, middle and late. As the effects change the longer you wait.
Interesting point, I was thinking more of letting the undergrowth catch up as it looked underdeveloped compared to the top, I’ll pop some under the scope to see what the trichs are doing.

I harvest all my autos in two stages probably for different reasons though. I prefer wet trimming but start to see double after awhile. I do the top the first day and save all the trim. Second day I finish the bottom and a lot of that goes with the first days trim into the freezer for bubble hash. I only grow two plants so it takes four days.

I've tried letting the bottom halves go longer but have never seen much improvement in the buds, I assume because they're autos.

Thanks Marzig. Yeah I really have to build a bubble hash rig, I have years worth of trim in the freezer and now this havest too..

I've been looking into the dry ice process for my next harvest. Already have the bags so would just have buy the dry ice from a local grocery store that carries it. Sounds like it might be quite a bit easier.

The real issue is the final stage. It takes for ever to filter. I am trying to source 7 gallon (5 gallon extended) buckets add a bulkhead fitting and then put a vacuum cleaner to help pull the water through.

I always have to partial harvest because I rarely prune my plants. I do remove yellow or depleted leaves when necessary. I have cured some buds from my Colombian Gold and they smell like sweet spice. The smoke is nice and it's a great weed if you want to be medicated , but still have sht to do! Lol!

I have been researching when to harvest and it is done by trichomes color and clarity.
The more red they get there comes a point where the potency goes away and they become stale.
Slightly red is more psychoactive from what I've read but if all red they are stale

Well if we're talking pistils then color change, time, and variety plays a part. I've grown indica varieties where there pistils turn orange before fully mature. I've also grown hybrids where there pistils are still slightly white( beige) and the trichomes were milky.

I could only speak from my harvests and the cured bud I have from five months earlier are still smelling like blueberries and the buds are still slightly squeezable.
