Up here in the eastern Finger Lakes, Amish and Mennonites are coming otta rhe woodwork. It's a step back in time. Quite the cult.
Was in Syracuse for training in the 90s, mostly with fellow Canadians. Happy hour was a foreign concept to us as much as it was foreign to our hosts to run out of beer. First for everything! Good times!

The local Amish came from Ohio in the early 50s. They have their own schools, language, churches and way of life - all farmers and entrepreneurs, a helpful bunch where everyone works hard. They know their barns and roofed our garage with metal - looks great. Patio Hindu Kush intrigued them as did the garden plants.

That's not always an option - certainly not heard of locally.

Guessing fear of estrangement would be a powerful motivator to return.

Quite familiar with being treated differently for how I spend my Sundays.
I was raised in an Assembly of God church. What I learned was God is hard of hearing. Speaking in tongues is a misnomer. It should be shouting in tongues. Anyway I got a lifetime's worth of religion by age 13.

I've interacted with quite a few (mostly young men) and all so far seem to be very balanced, intelligent (though a bit naive at times) folks. I think they might have something lots of us might be missing. Community.

I Triple Dog Dare FEMA to try that at even 10th the cost (that was donated).
