two questions for you, i just read your compost thread

1) do you reccomend soil moist as an additive to the soil, it retains 200 times its weight in water and slowly releases it back.

2) how different is vermicompost compared to regular composting

I'm new to MJ growing, with only 1 harvest so far, but I'm in.

well vermicomposting is 100 times cooler. It involves worms eating the compost and leaving being worm castings, their "poop". It is incredibly healthy and full of myco and mineral and good stuff with a low NPK of 1-0-0. It can be added to all soils to make it, well, better. By the bag the stuff gets kinda up there and I am seeing the best way to go soil affordably over the long run is to start vermicomposting. Worms can eat half their weight in food a day and worms tray hold 1000s of worms. That is pounds a week.

I got an email for an ebay item. Look at it. Under Vermicompositng. It is a worm bin with multiple trays for 10-15k number of worms. It has an attached sput for collecitng casting tea. Only like 65 bucks with shipping. I am stoked.

I am looking at cheap hyponex soil organic with my own worm castings and some perlite and dolomite and I am set.

This is my first 2 organic soil grows going and my 2nd grow ever really going. I am lovin it.

I'm one step ahead of you DC , stay tuned for the next instalment which is Vermicomposting. We struck a base here with a compost thread, I'd like to expand on the beautiful world of composting. The worms in active composting are by far the best additive if you're willing to deal with them. I use indoor compost, so worms are just not practical for me, however worm castings are added on a schedule for me. I thought of trying your soil mix, because it sounded good, and did a little checking on Hyponex. From was what I got out of it, was that the soil is dense and does'nt absorb water well. that was the topsoil. also I assume the organic only has cow manure and peat added it. It does'nt state what other organic material or other it has in it (vermiculite, perlite). The product is cheap but not the quality. The recipe given a guideline, I use about 30-40% perlite in my mix and the compost portion only accounts for 20% or so of my mix. Basically my mix as of now looks like this:

- 20% Organic Potting Soil (also contains, Peat moss, Humus, and trace nutrients)
- 20% Perlite
- 20% Compost Mix (Secret ingredients for now )
- 10% Vermiculite
- 10% Bone Meal
- 10% Blood Meal
- 5% Wormcastings
- 5% Guano (mixed to your liking, supplementing based on growth cycle)

I've been tinkering with it for a while and I would suggest a similar mix to anyone interested in organic growing, using the compost guideline or experimenting with your own. Peace and love everyone

tea of 1tbls High N batguano, 1 dose of SPT, 10 ml liquid karma, week 1 serving of Bio-Bizz, 1tsp molasses, to 1gallon of unchlorinated water. I bubbled it for 2 days.

Sounds interesting DC, I'd like to see a side-by-side with that against 1 tbls High N Guano, 1 tbls Worm Castings, 2 tbls Fish Emulsion, and a small doesage of Kelp Oil : 1 Gallon likewise H2O ...

You can avoid the bottle formulas that way and I bet you'd see similar results mate . I'll start putting together a little something to showcase nature vs bottle perhaps

just found the maxixrop liquid kelp for 10 dollars online. It is pretty healthy looking goods.

I have a few questions that have been bugging me.

-what ratio of High N batguano per gallon of water would you use?
-with your formula would you just switch to High P bat guano?
-would you include spt on just watering days?
-how often would you feed your plants throughout their life?

Hey DC, I checked out that Maxicrop Liquid Kelp and it looks good, I tend to look for OMRI listed products if I'm going to buy bottled nutrients.

I would stick with no more than 2 tbls of the high N guano per Gallon of water (I use less because my compost is fed guanos periodically). I love guano so I use a 1/3 dose of high P guano for every high N dosage.

My soil is very self-sustaining, so the only nutrients I need to use when feeding are the guanos in smaller doses, kelp oil (if I'm using any), and Superthrive and those are usually weekly or bi-weekly and only with waterings.

My feeding schedule in reality starts feeding as a seedling, the major aspects of my soil mixture don't activate until a couple weeks into the seed's life; when it needs it most. I start the above additives in week three. My light cycle is 24/0 during seedling (first 2 weeks), followed by 18/6 preflower (2 weeks, feeding starts here), finished lastly by my 12/12 flowering cycle 7-13 weeks). Makes feeding easier in my opinion and the plants never long for anything

The soil I'm using right now, and for my 1st grow was:
3-Qts. Miracle Grow Cactus Mix (Forest Compost, sand,peat,perlite). Coarser compost.
3-Qt. Miracle Grow Potting Soil (Forest Compost, Peat, Perlite).
2-Qts. Perlite.
1-Qt. Vermiculite.
1-Qt. Organic Peat.
1-tsp. Bone Meal.
1-tsp. Blood Meal.
1-Tbs. Miracle Grow 10-10-10 (slow release) fertilizer.
This mixture fills a 2 1/2 gallon pot (10" dia. x 10" high.
I tested my soil with a dual electronic soil tester from (Ferry-Morse) seed Co. The PH is 6.5. The meter also tests the nutrients in the soil, from Too Little, Ideal and Too Low. I have excellent drainage, and don't have to water for 3-4 days. I germinated White Widow seeds a week ago, one of my girls' is 6" tall already, the other 3 are 5" tall. (nice and bushy). You have a recipe that sounds cool too, and I'm making changes in my mixture next time around, to drop the 10-10-10 slow release fertilizer, and go with the bat guano and the worm castings. Not sure about the dolomite yet, because it adds alkalinity (so does the peat) to the soil. I'll test the soil after I mix it and if I need the lime I'll add it then. I can't get pics right now because my main computers down and I need to re-format my hard drive. I'll need some MJ to get me thru that.
