which is the inlet and which is the outlet? does the tray hold solution or does it drain it all out. i am assuming that it holds solution which is then topped up with fresh aerated solution. if so, how do you empty the tray when changing the rez?

The larger one is the res...

The smaller one is the tray, and it will be cut to the same height as the pots...

Fill the res as full as you are capable... you can even line it with a plastic bag and eliminate res clean up... just empty/change bag/fill....

here is a pic of the store bought fill/drain fitting (little green guy)

and the overflow pipe (tall gray and black dude)

You can have just a piece of hose, fit in a hole almost too small for it... and it will work.. but if you can find fittings like that...

They are not expensive... $15 dollars here... and work great... you can even customize the height by cutting some of the pipe off...

also great for keeping the hydroton from falling in the res and pump...

So just to recap... the tray floods when the pump is on... and drains when the pump is off...

Most people flood 3 or 4 times for 5 minutes during lights on... 0 times lights off

I am flooding 12x a day for 15 minutes...

have you chosen a medium for the clones? RW , RR, etc...????

there is no valve or anything... water flow is unrestricted both ways...

and the pump offers a way through when it is off...

so the water pretty much goes back the same way it came...

They weigh dry at 4 grams each... and you dampen them to 25g ~ 30g..

Mine are 1.75" cubes i think...

and probably rockwool cubes and hydroton

no need for more Rockwool... you only need it for the rooting part...

Al fills the whole pot with RW, but he can only flood once a day... so hydroton is more productive...

Al's RW potful will hold water for a day or so if the pump fails... but we keep an eye on things..

I rather have bigger buds...

in the net pots.

Take a digital scale with you and buy the cube that weighs 4g... or the closes to it...

we are talking about Rockwool here right... greenish, very light... extremely absorbent... fragile as can be...?

That should work, you just need to make sure the over flow can drain more than the pump can flood....

You may need a second/bigger overflow if the pump is too strong, but I actually think you will do fine with that one...

#1 the roots may be air pruned... meaning that as they escape the pot, they will dry and die...

keeping the roots enclosed, forces the roots to remain within the hydroton, which contains enough moisture to get them through the next flood...

#2 the roots that do escape without air pruning would get all tangled, and then you cannot move the plants individually... not without damaging roots anyway...

i will of course be covering the the tray to stop light like you have.

Keeps the algae growth down on the pots... but is not necessary... few people do it like this...

I think it looks nice and reflects some of the light back up...

I fucked up on the pots too... I got round 6"dia and 7" tall pots when everyone else is using 5.5" square pots... I could fit 25% more plants on my tray...

4 plants per square foot is Al's formula... I am doing 3 right now...

You will be keeping them short, so you will not suffer from a slightly smaller pot...

Bugs is getting 1 oz out of 40" sativa spears on 5.5" square pots...

so you will be fine with 4"

been doing my indoor with very small pots using coco and the girls love it, i average about 20g per plant in the last 2 runs and the pots i am using are 2l pop containers and even have 2 right now in 20 oz coke bottles. anyway point is i dont think hydro relies as much as soil on root mass since they are fed so efficiently. so less roots gives more plant i guess

Never wet... and never squeeze it either... it crushes the airspace in the cube...
