what it comes down to is the cfl's are not as efficent at turning electricity in to light, they are around 30% i think, also plants respond better to a single point of bright light better than they do to the same amount of light spread out over multiple bulbs, plus with an hps you get more light per watt of input being that a cfl is around 30% and an hps is 55% effiecent or there about
