marijuana and depression

has marijuana helped your depression? how does it help you or ease your struggles?

i just have to say.. i think mary janes one of the best thing that ever happend to me. i have depressive and suicidal thoughts a lot, and i have since ive been in grade school, and i've never told anyone about it therefore never been diagnosed or anything, and i dont want to be put on anti-depressants and have my mind and all my emotions controlled. i wud rather smoke a joint when im a bad mood, than take a tiny pill everyday regardless of my state of mind.

i just think that when i come home and when all i can think of is dieing and shitty thoughts, as soon as i get high i not only feel much better but i can rethink everything and put things into a better prospective. its clearly not for everyone but its definitly helped me. i also used to have anxiety attacks last year for a couple weeks.. i started taking herbal remedies because i did NOT want to be put on lorazapam or xanax or something, and they helped a bit but after i started smoking weed everyday again, they stopped altogether, and have never returned.. not even once.

how do you feel about this subject?
thx:peace:

I was on Ritalin for 8 years, then prozac. Weed is better.
Marijuana keeps me out of jail now.
I haven't been arrested since I started smoking EVERY day. (knock on wood)
Without marijuana I tend to act on my violent tendencies alot faster. If I burn one I can usually get away with hittin the heavy bag, instead of putting whatever aggravated me through a wall.

That's a fallacy.
yup, to each their own.
All the women in my family do the prozac (or equivalent) thing and it works for them.
And the wifes brother turns into a crackhead when he smokes weed. starts stealin shit and lying about everything. Only person I've ever met that is like that with marijuana. :-?

Any drug whether it be weed, coke, prozac, or even caffine and sugar (yes refined sugar is a drug IMO) is bad for you. Self-medication can worsen what ever desease or depression you have. There is no secret anecdote to life except to banish what stresses you cant handle. But most times you cant just "leave it all behind". Its all a process that you must take and it takes time...LOTSSSS of time. .... Thing is people are always looking for the easy way out, hense anti-depressants and any other mind-altering substance.

i guess being happy is all a state of mind. weed might not make everyone happy but for me it puts a smile on my face every time

I know some people are going to hate on me for this but...

Do you want my honest opinion why your anxiety has stopped or became less violent? its becasue your brain has become weaker. Constant use of weed or any drug that releases dopamine un-naturally eventually weakens the cells that produce dopamine. over time you produce less and less dopamine which would account for less mood swings becuase your mind doesnt respond as well as it used to, or should.

...But i guess you take the good with the bad. If being partially "brain dead" is better than having attacks then i suppose its better. IMO i would go to a doctor if things where that bad.

You must be high. THC does NOT harm brain cells.

THC its self doesnt BUT the effect it has on the brain does. If you dont believe me answer me this... does weed/thc release dopamine naturally? ... nope its a drug. drugs release dopamine and with constant abuse it will weaken the dopamine cycle. Why do you think people who are heavy pot heads need weed to do anything? its becuase when they do something without weed the effect really isnt there. their body/mind/personality is used to the weed supplying the dopamine aka self-medication. ..the same goes for alcohol or anything that can release dopamine un-naturally.

...im not trying to be a dick im just telling it how it really is. I've leaned about this stuff and how the brain works. :joint:

True. Cannabinoid receptors regulate the release of neurotransmitters. Epilepsy is a car speeding without breaks. Cannabinoid receptors are the brain's natural braking system. Clinical depression is often caused by a neurotransmitter imbalance in the brain.

Is marijuana is a "cure" for depression? No. It might help some individuals deal with the symptoms. It does cure my insomnia which greatly improves my general quality of life. Chronic insomniacs learn how to operate in "zombie mode." Having to fight through a sea of fatigue all day is not pleasant and can certainly combine with stress to make someone depressive who is not otherwise a depressed person.

The effect that you are describing is a type of physical addiction. THC does not produce physical addiction. Please stop generalizing - "drugs release dopamine." Well shit pass me the tylenol, I'm gonna get HiiiiiiiiiGH.
