this is great thread....I love how people say HPS is to expensive, but I'll bet you will probably spend just as much money on CFLs as an HPS by the time your done buying 12 CFL bulbs and then reflectors and cords and y splitters and all the other crap I always see people buy for there CFL grows, you could just buy this 400w HPS

High Tech Garden Supply

it's only 119.00 usd, i have 2 of them....I've grown a half pound under one of them and I'm sure you could do more...this thing will raise the bill(in Oregon) by about $15- $20 a month, are people really scared that's a red flag...LOL......or do you think that's to much to spend a month? Than your not a serious farmer........let me tell you just in my flowering room I'm hitting 2000 watts just in lights plus the a/c fans and exhuast humidity control all together about 3600 watts 12 hours a day..oh then there is my veg room it's pulling about 2000 watts total at any given moment...at 3:00 am my house is running 6000 watts.....and it all costs me about 220 a month in electric during the summer to run....guess what....the electric company never calls to ask me why I use so much power.......why would they...I'm a valued customer..my bill is always paid on time.......do you think they want to compromise that..LOL...no

Please don't be scared...splurge..LOL...by an HPS..it's not as complicated as you think, really it's less complicated than all the Frankenstein home made CFL light fixture things I see, It's a professionally made HPS delivered to your door...you just hang it and plug it in..is that so hard?keep the ballast outside the grow room, go to the store and buy a $20 bathroom exhaust fan and a $10 desk fan to help the temps if they are a problem.....super cheap and simple...and you'll have a lot of nice dense nugs come harvest time..............

Oh and replace the lights in your house with CFLs,,,,,all of them...this will drop your electric bill by about $10 -$20(in Oregon) a month..now you can rest easy about the cost of running your HPS because you compensated for it by thinking green..:blsmoke::joint::peace:

cfls are just so easy they make up for the lack of lumens they have sure everyones wants big HID systems and get crazy yields but so much more work is involved and how do you justify the amount of power your using?

cfls are
1.cheap
2. small
3. low heat
4 you can get them any where

hahaha i have two 1000w hps hahaha :hump:

how do they make up for the lack of lumens ? my one 1000w is 140,000L

if you dont like the work then you should not be growing
fuck justifying the power use two 1000w i can see if you hade like 4 to 10 1000ws i also have two small house heaters that draw 1500w when running a wounder how many people have heaters like that and are not growing and you dont see the hydro coming after them

I use a 400w HPS for vegg and flowering, and get ~4-5 ounces of big-bud every 4 months. Go to High Tech Garden Supply's website and get a nice set-up they are very inexpensive. Oh yeah my grow box is 4x4x4. You would be amazed how much tree you can get out of a small space when you work a little bonzai magic.:joint:

I love my 400w HPS. I was using CFL's for my first few grows...until I saw the light..no pun intended. I shun CFL's after I saw the HUGE change in results

can you grab your hps with your bare hand?
it can be done - Read on this is wild, but not cheap

some crazy guy came in my store with this 64-bit ballast set up for his HPS. this set up was insane, and might i say non-pot related but it got me excited,(thinking of growing):blsmoke: and remember i'm just saying i liked the set up but i can only imagine how much it cost, he said it was the first one in the world that he invented it, maybe true, maybe not i have never seen one before, nor did i get a picture of it, the ballast was large, almost the size of a lunch box, but was actually cool to the touch, it was fin cooled, and sounded like a mini PC , the light was blinding bright, but the neat part was you could adjust the lumens because the ballast had a usb port on the back that you could jack into to adjust different parts of the light, one time he put in a lumens meter to show the intensity, the next he put in a photo eye and told it what lumens to produce, and it adjusted based on the other lights in the room as well, from blinding me to not bright at all, this photo-eye adjusted the amps that the light drew, it was quite insane,

now the most insane thing of all, this fixture ran on standard 120 volt grounded outlet!! which was the reason he came into my store, he need an extension cord, he got the lightest-duty grounded extension we had to prove you needed nothing special, he pluged it in, put a meter between the power cord from the wall, and ballast and turned it on, the meter showed 120 volts, i was very impressed, a few of these would be crazy, just thought i'd comment on how blown away by this set up i was, comments appreciated!!
