What is considered the first day of flowering? When the plants show their sex and start to get pistils, or when they are starting to get little popcorn buds or what? If growing indoors is it the first day you put them on 12/12 and if thats the case when is the first day of flowering if growing outdoors.

Are the pistols the parts of the plant that come in twos usually located opposite each other and horizontaly located between nodes ? School me please :)

I considered my first day of flowering the day I changed the cycle. Looking forward to some replies.

Didnt you ask this question before without a response ?

Pistils are the white hairs you see on your plant when it is showing sex, and no I have not asked this before. thanks for the reply.

I hope I get a reply from someone who really knows the answer. The reason I want to know is because they say 50-60 days of flowering for this strain or 55-65 for a different strain...so I would like to know when to begin counting the days!!!

I would say when the light cycle changes, start counting from that day. Vegging could tak a month or 2 as well depending on the strain.

Indoor or outdoor, the first day of flowering is when the plant recieves 10 or more hours of total darkness....

for us indoor growers, this day is completely obvious...when we switch our lights to 12/12

for outdoor growers...well it's not so obvious.

But if you are trying to figure this out so you can count down 60 days...that's not how to tell when your plants are ready for harvest...the only true way to know is get a proper magnifying glass and check the tricomes for cloudyness.

or a not so accurate way is when about 75% of the pistils go from white to red.

K heres what I dont get. Doesnt a plant need so much veg time before it will mature and flower? If you started a seedling on 12/12 from day 1 would you consider that the first day of flowering? I too would like to get a solid answer on this because I remember reading somewhere that it wasnt til it showed sex.

If you start counting the day you switch the lights you'll come up short. I always start counting the day it shows pistals.

Yea we need to answer this. Everyone uses this measure in their journals or when they ask questions, so we need consistency. I'd say its when you start 12/12 because in terms of controlling your plants environment, you are making it believe it is in the flowering stage, even if it doesn't yet show. Most people like to change to hps or warm/soft white cfls at this point, so plants usually aren't getting veg light anymore.

This is what I do too. Guy just remember just cause you changed the light cycle doesn't mean it goes right into flowering. It takes sometime for the plant to switch from veg to flower. So count from when it starts to flower not from when you switch the light cycle.

Right you are making it beleive it is going into flowering time, but it doesn't just go right into flowering. It takes some time for it to actually start to flower. My last crop took 2 weeks(cold temps in my grow spot) to start flowering. Now if i went by when I switched the light i would have been at 8 weeks right now. I know for a fact it's way to early to harvest and it needs atleast 2-3 weeks to go till harvest.

I agree. It doesnt make sense to count from changing the lights

personally i consider flowering to begin on the first day in which pistils are present on a plant...

i also consider the 1st day of veg the first FULL day a seedling has sprouted above soil

just my opinion. i could be wrong but thats how i do it

Well from what I've come to know you count from the cycle change. Because regardless the first couple weeks of 12/12 is when the plant finishes vegetation . That's why plants double & triple in size in those first few weeks of 12/12.

actually the 1st day of flowering is when you see pistil clusters, i.e...more than 2 pistils. if you veg long enough a plant will show pre-sex pistils. this doesn't mean you start counting. introducing 12/12 activates a hormone that triggers the plant to flower. still not counting yet...usually in 3-14 days (depending on maturity) you'll see more than 2 pistils forming on top. once that happens, you can start counting. another thing about the countdown....they aren't set in stone. basic (very basic and general) guidelines in perfect conditions. most plants nowadays are hybrids, that being said, you may get a sativa dom. or an indica dom. ind.'s can flower up to 80 days, or only take 45 and anywhere in between. sativa's can go 90 or as low as 70, it just depends. this is where your scope comes in handy. it's the on,y real way to determine when to pull, or go another 2 weeks.

Exactly listen folks we're not talking about transition. Or stretch and we also need to put into account how long the plant has been in vegetation I have plants right now and vegetation that are already showing sex still on the vegetation cycle because of their age so you have to I say wait until you see some flower production a few pistols then count your day or week.. But bottom line you need to be checking your plants in your buds so you know when to flush and other stuff like that at the end depending on how you're growing. I don't know I don't have much experience but that's just the way I do it

the day you flip to flower, dont go by breeder times go by when your plant tells you its ready. its a living organism from flip its on its own schedule even though techincally its on yours.

Strain flower times set by breeders will only translate into day one of flower being the first day you notice flowers.
