drying weed smells hay/grass? thoughts?

ok, so my plant (chronic) has been chopped and is slowly drying in a box with two holes cut. In one hole is a fan basically blowing air all the way through...the buds are on string above the the fans path.

now, when i "squeeze" one of the buds (chronic) it gives off a great smell...but then disappears and its a hay/grass type smell.

after searchin, it seems its a common prob for noobs like myself.

is it cut too early?
strain related?
both? neither?

does this happen with all/most types and its just a case of dry for a week (or when stems can "snap") then store in a glass jar to cure. Making sure to keep an eye on them, burping the jar every so often.

any thoughts or advice?
its drying in in a dark box (with lid) and wouldnt say its anymore than 60 degrees (in another room away from the grow tent)

you searched and didn't read that in every single damn post about a hay/grass smell that the smell goes away during the cure?

most posts had lots of answers from lots of people...i wasnt sure which one. so i thought i would start my own.

but, because i read the posts i thought maybe it was jsut the strain I had chosen (chronic)...its my first grow and wondered if anybody on riu could confirm/deny this.

so does all marijuana go from smelling nice in the tent, chop it, then smells like hay - dry, cure then back to great smelling bud?

anyone?

does all marijuana smell like this during the drying process? or have i chopped too early? or is it just strain related?

yeah pretty much
that puts my mind at rest knowing that this happens to every type of marijuana and to every grower.

we chooped the chronic plant on friday night after 24 hours in the dark. still smells kinda hay like unless i squuze them. i will wait till another few days before i jar them up.

personally, i do like my smoke to be of the funky smelly variety :D So i might go for a something like a lemon haze, skunk or something for next time.

well, just for anybody that was intrested in the end result

1 x Chronic (Serioues Seeds)
vegged for 2 weeks (400w hd)
flower 8 weeks (600 hps)
got me 1.5oz or dried bud!
the hay smell is almost gone...but after reading up i think Chronic is quite a bland bud in both taste and smell. might of chopped a week early...but its starting to give you a nice heady high! I will know for my next batch of plants...gonna start flushing this saturday! Cant wait!

So thanks for all the people who chipped in, during my time of worry!

Alright mate? Yeah it is totally normal, nothing to worry about. After proper drying and curing it will develop an aroma more like weed not hay.

This is what happens when you dry with a fan.

If you want to get rid of that smell, toss in a couple of fan leaves. In a day or two some of the moisture will come back as will the smell.

In the future just hang dry and dont blow a fan directly on them unless you plan on feeding it to cattle.

I hang dry mine too. And it smells quite hay like at the start of drying, it develops the smell as it is drying, and the aroma develops more as it is cured.

Yeah, i bought a few great jars from ikea...2.50 for big proper jars with lids! Perfect. Now its the hardest part...keeping your fingers out the jars during curing haha!

hmm...i did make a bud dry box. bud was hanged within the box, a fan was at the bottom making sure the air was circulated.

With the big crop coming, i was gonna hang dry in the tent and just leave the carbon filter on...maybe a small fan in the tent.

I thought the bud goes moldy if its doesnt have good air circulation?

There is the possibility of mould without good ventilation but dont have your fan directly on the buds that you are drying.

how did u handle the heat w/ 600w hps?
at the begining of summer it was a perfect temp in the tent (75-82)...but it just started getting warmer and warmer. We ended up buy a cooltube which brought it down...but not has much as I thought/hoped. Still, between 80-90 isnt too bad for the hottest time of year...should get a lot easier.

Might look into a strain that handles high temps/stress better than others...

the fan was under the buds ...but the path of the air being pushed through wasnt touching. I might try a bit of both and see if i can spot the diff.
