I just started germing my seeds. I have a 400 watt hps/mh and i here it is to hot to start seedlings when they sprout. My ? is i dont have the spare cash to go out and buy a few good fluoresnt bulbs but i have 2

40 watt 48" T12 Medium Bi-Pin (G13) Base Gro-Lux Wide Spectrum Rapid Start Fluorescent Sylvania Light Bulb

sitting around will this work for the first 3 weeks? As for the distance i can probly put these lights 1-2 inchs from the seedlings cause the light doesnt throw to much heat.
Thx

the seeds dont need light untill they sprout the surface.

no i dont think so.
not enought wattage and it sounds like an incandecent fluro tube you have.
and not a correct cfl with the right colour spectrum.

yes the t-12 flouros will be sufficient for seedlings and short veg period before switching to the hps. i used to keep a mother plant under t-12s just keep them close to the plant.

Hey dude what's good?? your T12's will be enough to get those babies going!!!you can keep em under there untill the light doesn't penetrate to the bottom leaves then i would switch it up...i personally veg with flouro's the whole way then switch it to hps or natural sunlight for flowering here are some pics.... I only used two flouros for this plant..she's flowering beautifully now

:joint: yup........ill go along with this. indica dominant plants seem to do well longer under standard flouros than sativa dominant due to the indica being squat and able to keep the light closer to more of the plant surface:joint:

Maaaaan, don't listen to these dudes. Well, yeah listen to them because they know what's up with lighting and they wouldn't even think about doing a whole grow with fluoros. Truth is that many successful growers use fluoros the whole way and get a good product. Mind you that it wont be as good as MH and HPS but with enough lighting, temp reg, humidity reg, and the right nutes, you can get some pretty good bud. Back in the 80's when people were starting to experiment indoors, fluoros is all they used and got some damn good killer bud... if you do go this route, make sure that you have minimum 2700K bulbs for seedling and flower stage and 5600K for veg. Honestly, it would be easier to buy 2 or more double bulb ballasts and place vertically on either side of your plants when they starts getting tall... and don't forget the mylar plastic and some red saran wrap to cover at least one of you're tubes on every ballast to get better lighting Peace! (the wrap idea is a joke, lol)

what different things ????????.
there are incandesent flouro tubes (no good).
of pure cfls(both have different light spectrums).
the lamp spectrum matters and if i did not i would be better using car headlamps to grow with .
