My very 1st grow.. very ghetto to start!

This is my very 1st attempt at growing from germination to harvest!! I'd like to thank RIU and the rest of the internets for all knowledge you guys have given me. This is not my best attempt at growing, as I won't have the funds for a true op for a few months. I'm just trying to see what kind of results I'll get with a minimal amount of effort/supplies. I'm planning to keep the plants in separate boxes complete with mylar'd walls, a fan, and three 23W CFLs each (may change).

I found two seeds in a random bundle of some good shit, likely outdoor grown. IIRC, it had tight buds, little smell, and a nice light green tinge. I wrapped the seeds in separate paper towels, soaked them in mineral water and wrapped them each in foil, then put them in a part of my desk that's near the heater vent. After about 3 days, they both had a taproot going. I left them in there for a couple more days while I bought supplies, and came back to seed 1 chillen there with a ~1" taproot and seed 2" looking kinda limp with one a quarter the size. I sterilized the pots, filled them with soil, and put the seeds root down about 1/2" into the soil.

I used miracle grow "moisture control" soil because it had an N rich nute profile, and it was of OK consistency (it has perlite and such to control moisture). For the pots, I chose two 12" x 12" plastics w/ drain holes. I'm not ordering shit to my house, and I can't be hitting the grow shops quite yet. For now, MG soil is the best stuff I can get. Same goes for the lights. I got three 23W daylight CFLs (most powerful <5000K CFLs I could find) and will pick up cone reflectors plus mylar tomorrow. I won't be getting any nutes unless I need them.

Seed 1 became a seedling two days after planting, while seed 2 is still laying dormant in the soil to this day. For now, the seedling is sitting in a temporary box under a whopping 13W 2100K CFL desk light that's always on. It's definitely growing though; pic 6 was taken only 20hrs after pic 5. Once I set up the permanent grow box, the seedling is moving right in for some more 24hr light until it's ready to veg.

Right after taking pic 5, it was time to water so I sprayed the seedling and the soil around it with distilled water as usual. Only this time, the plant became top heavy and fell over. I immediately tied it to the wooden dowel you see in pic 6, but the stem is creased a little. It's still growing 30hrs later, so I guess it's OK.

The quality of the pics is pretty bad cause I had to use my cell. Once I find my camera, I'll be taking high res pics throughout the grow.

Any and all comments are welcome!

Growing on a budget kinda sucks but you can still get some decent results. If you get a little more money together, buy good soil and nutes.

Might consider putting cracked bean a little deeper into the soil next time. Half an inch isn't very deep. Good luck to your plant!

Thanks! Yah, growing on a budget does suck indeed. Definitely post a link of your grow, cause I'd like to flower early myself if your bud turns out OK.

I'm including some new high-res pics of what is now a bushy little seedling. The first was taken at exactly 4:20 :eyesmoke:

Time for a 2 1/2 day update!

The plant is doing remarkably well (as far as I know), except for the weak stem problem.

I took it out of its box for the night and put it under a stronger CFL (whopping 23W vs the atomic explosion like 13W) angled in the opposite direction of the plant stretch. I also removed the support stake and set up a fan to help coax some stem strengthening.

Once the plant goes into the final grow box with full light & ventilation, these little problems should go away.. hopefully.

see how its leaning over? You should LST that plant for sure use a plastic coated paper clip and straithen it out just like this. hook the end with the bigger loop arount the stem of your plant just above the lowest set of leaves and bend it over by shoving the paper clip into the dirt until its almost touching the dirt As it grows it will come back up to the light. when its groing straight back up again repeat the procedure. Keep doing this until the plant makes a complete lap around your pot. bu this point your 3 foot tall plant will be a huge bush that stands like a foot tall. Then i choose to thin out a very few of the larger leaves only if they look like they block light from a budsight.

Then switch to 12/12 and sit back and watch the magic.

with this method you no longer get the one nug that gre normal
but you will see results more like this
I would say you could get almost 3 ounces out of that box with nothing more than 10 Cfls
and a computer fan bro.

lemme know if you have any questions just pm me

I've heard of LST before but thought it was something totally different. So LST basically makes the plant shorter and denser, while in turn strengthening the stem? I'm gonna go buy some of those plastic-coated clips and set it up tonight! One of greatest fears from this grow was the size of the plant. I'd much rather it be dense and bushy in true Indica style than any taller than 1-2'.

So I should LST the plant, and once it makes a complete revolution around the pot, just switch it to 12/12 and trim the lower fan leaves if they block light?

Yep thats all i do. If you compare one time with two identical clones, one just let it grow and one do an LST grow. When your done you will see how much more you can get off of a single plant.

Anyhow lemme know when you get them paper clips, your baby needs to be a little bit bigger before you can start with the LST. I'll help ya out to get started and when you got the hang of it your gonna love the decision to do it.

Couple questions bro, how big is your pot? And what tye of ferts are you gonna use?

12" x 12" pot, have no idea which nutes to use as I only have access to common stores like Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

I went out and got plastic-covered paper clips, but every freakin place I went to only had the 'jumbo' ones :wall:

I'm keeping the plant under a breeze w/ the slightly more powerful CFL overnight again. I'd love to use something stronger than 13/23W (and I know I eventually will have to), but they are impossible to find around here.

Lights
You can get them at walmart. Higher kelvin to Veg with and lower to flower so 5000k for veg and 2700 to flower... you can get them in a three pack for like 15 bucks. For that box you have the plant in now your gonna need about ten cfl's to cover that area. About 8 of the Vegatative ones the 5000k and two of the flowering spectrum, the 2700k bulbs. Thats only for the vegatative growth your gonna need about another month or so before you can induce your flowering cycles. We'll get into that later you need to worry about lights now. For fifty bucks you can get almost everything you need at walmart.

Fertilizer

Alaskan Fish fertilizer
This is great for a new grower, its next to impossible to burn your plants with. This link is to lowes and you can get this for like 13.98.

For flowering later on
This is for when you switch to flower your gonna need this stuff about two weeks before you switch

This stuff for your gonna want for sure in about a month
This is the last fert your gonna use so you can hold off on it for now.

Besides that hows it looking got any new pics? heres one of mine

I got three of the 'blue-spectrum' 23W CFLs waiting for reflector fixtures. Believe it or not, I could only find the more powerful CFLs in 2700K.. go figure . Looks like I'm gonna have to take a little road trip for moar wattage; while I'm there, I'll try to pick up some fertilizer as well. For the 10 CFLs you mentioned, how many watts does each need to be, and what fixture do they go in? Also, I got some paper clips for LST'ing but I could only find the 'jumbo' ones. Does that matter?

As for the plant, it's been doing a lot better since I've been keeping it under a fan and stronger CFL every night. That pathetic 13W bulb I'm using for now has got to go, cause it looks like the plant is really stretching for light. I just watered the plant a day before I took these pics. Up to now, I've been watering very conservatively to avoid over-watering the seedling, but now that it's maturing it starts to sag when barely watered. I bought another gallon of distilled water, and will switch from spraying the soil with a squirt bottle to watering normally. In one of the pics, I highlighted an part of a leaf where the tips are curling. Is this just stretching, or something else?

Your grow looks sick dude, send me a link to your journal if you have one. Eventually, I hope I can get one of that scale going. As a matter of fact, I'm saving up lots of $$ to go commercial. I'm doing a couple of these under-budgeted grows to familiarize myself with the process so it's easier to get everything going when I finally have the funds.

A buddy of mine popped a seed in a pot last summer, left it outside, and had a 2ft plant by September. No nutes, no fertilizer, nothing. Just good soil I guess. He flowered it with three 23W CFLs (with nothing but foil as a reflector) and plans to harvest this weekend. He actually picked some of the bud pre-harvest, and dried it in a jar with some paper towel strips for a couple of days. This premature, uncured buddha was as good as -- if not better -- than the shit you buy on the streets here, and I'm talking about very good bud. If he got those results for doing nothing, I can only imagine the quality of the product you get with a real grow.

Ok first of all get rid of the distilled water it has nothing in it for your plants at all. Just use a Gallon of tap water thats been left out for at least 36 hours. Thats gives the chlorine a chance to evaporate.

The most efficeint CFL you can get is the 26 watt bulbs.

And the jumbo clips are what you want, they hold better.

And bend that thing over today if you wait to long then the stem becomes brittle and you run the risk of breaking it.

When your ready to do a "bigger" grow then I will share a few tips with you.

What part of the country you live in? Can you grow outdoors or do you live in the city?

Anyways keep it going the baby looks beautiful man.

Where bouts you live mate? Distilled water isn't worth it from what i hear and has no good minerals...
I myself am currently collecting rain water, i have fitted a big tank in my garden with a load of netting over to avoid leaves and other unwated things :P

your plant so far looks nice and healthy mate, id like to see how it turns out :)

^^^sounds funny huh?^^^
lol.. especially funny now bongsmilie

Thanks for the comments and suggestions Marijuanaa, I'm from the northeastern US near one of the big cities. Post a link to your journal if you got one.

The distilled water was for the seedling cycle, just in case. I think I'll try switching between rainwater and evaporated tap for the remainder of the plant's life. Would boiling the tap water be as good as letting it sit?

Yeah, the plant is finally LST'd (or what I think is LST). I am not sure exactly how to do it.. keep the stem straight and lean the plant over (pic 1), or actually force the stem to bend at an angle (pic 2). I'm guessing it's #2, so I'm going with that for tonight. Also, how do I know when to move the paper clip further along the rotation?

The lights and other additional supplies should be done by this weekend. I just have to figure out what fixtures to put all the bulbs in.

I'm not exactly in the city but I can't be doing an outdoor grow here, unless maybe I do it guerrilla. The cops don't even think to look for grow houses in my area though, so indoor is the way to go for now. Once I have enough profits saved up, I plan to buy land in the country and do a camouflaged outdoor crop. BTW this is all being posted over open wifi/tor; I even scrub the EXIF info from the pics I upload so don't worry about me being traced :blsmoke:. I just hope discussing commercial grows isn't against the rules or anything.

Here this may help you understand the reason behind bending the plant a little bit better. The object it to use the area you have more efficientlly by keeping the light even on ALL of the growth so you grow many medium sized buds instead of one big one and a bunch of popcorn buds.
