a major problem for the yellowing was the res temp being close to 80 got it to around 71 last night and this morning plants looking alot healthier and i started feeding them right as far as i know and can tell.
any ideas on how to keep res around 65 - 70 without changing a frozen water bottle everyday or even less than a day??
now that the roots are almost all in the water should i stop running the feeding tubes??
heres a pic as of this morning.
Your plants are looking great so far. A couple of cheap ideas for helping to keep the res temps down:
1. Yes, if the roots are in the water AND you are having problems with water temp then turn off the water pump. This will help bring the temps down.
2. Insulate your reservoir. Just wrapping your reservoir with Mylar or a space blanket like you can get at WalMart (you can get better ones at a outdoor sports store like R.E.I.) will help stabilize the temps so that when you do lower the temp it won't rise back up so fast.
3. Put your top-off water in the refrigerator.
4. Make an "automated" top-off system out of a plastic gallon jug (like a milk jug, though these are kind of flimsy), some 1/4" drip tubing, a 1/4" barb (http://www.dripirrigation.com/drip_irrigation_info.php?cPath=37&products_id=1273) and a 1/4" valve (http://www.dripirrigation.com/drip_irrigation_info.php?products_id=65) and some Plumber's Goop or similar sealant.
Poke a small hole in the bottom of the side of the jug, insert the barb, seal with the Plumber's Goop so it doesn't leak, let it dry, stick about 3" of the 1/4" tube on the barb, put on the valve, and finally stick another 6" of tubing on the barb.
To use, close the valve and fill up the jug with the same amount of water that your plants are currently drinking during the day. Freeze it overnight. Poke a small hole on top of your reservoir. In the morning, put the jug on top of your reservoir and feed the tube through the hole in your res and open the valve. The water will slowly melt during the day, both topping-off your res and keeping it cool.
If the plants are too close to the jug then make the tubes longer and set it on something to the side of the res. There will be condensation from the jug, so stick a rag under it to soak it up.
Hope this helps...
