He was my first hero. I modeled my style of play after him. I read the books. Even learned how to do research at an early age by going to the library and scouring periodicals for any article mentioning him.

I got in the habit of asking every old timer I met, men my grandfather's age and older, "Did you ever see Ty Cobb play?" They called me Little Ty, which I thought was a tremendous honor. But the nickname didn't stick in the dugout. :cry:

Of course. He perfected the technique. His philosophy was that it was kinder to cleat a man with clean, sharp spikes than dull, rusty ones.

And he sent a lot of men to the hospital. He said the base-paths belong to the runner and anybody standing in his way would pay the price.

Baseball was not a game to him, it was "something like a war."
