basically corporations now enjoy the freedom of speech, to include campaign advertising.
now our countries policies are going to be decided by the persons voted into office by WE the People.......who will be making our electoral decisions based on who won the commercial time-slot bid for American Idol and the Superbowl. we are fucked.

Corporations have always had freedom of speech. The recent effort to remove that right was declared unconstitutional. It was the flawed bill that was the big change, not the ruling.

There is a difference between free speech and pumping untold sums of $ to buy candidates/elections.

Do explain the difference. The supreme court said everyone has the right to amass money and spend it on their speech if they wish, and the corporations are no exception. If you don't like it, get to work on the constitutional amendment.

believe me im working on it. and the judicial system allowing corporations to HOARD human rights is fucking ridiculous. i dont see how an "entity" such as Enron should be allowed to pump millions and millions and millions (from just this ONE company) into ANY electoral process. corporations are NOT people. people are what corporations CHEW UP to make a buck. i understand the concept of what you are saying and yes thatt is (currently) the law. and i think that its BULLSHIT......wanna know why? because the only people this bill actually helps are the upper 1%. the rest of us (you know....us...the taxpayers.......the people for whom the dec of independance and the constitution were written for.....remember those pieces of parchment?)can anyone dispute that? can anyone honestly say that our country is headed towards anything resembling freedom and justice? is this new stuff? hell no its the same story since before any of us were born.....and that does NOT make it alright with me.

You're getting a little hysterical. Here..... vape a bowl of this bongsmilie. Corporations are collectives of people just like unions and AARP. In fact this ruling frees them up as well. We all vote to send representatives to congress. Those reps are not then just one vote, they embody all our votes. And when we join AARP or buy stock in a bank, we know (or have available to us) what that organization or company does with it's giving program. The org or corp then speaks for us in the marketplace of ideas which culminates in an election where we vote as individuals. Yes. I definitely think we are headed back to freedom and justice.

I am very pro big business, and even I think it is fucked up that
corporations have the same rights that people do. Freedom of
speech is one thing, but the freedom to trick people into thinking
that you are reporting facts, when it is clearly entertainment, and
not researched at all and made up, is another thing altogether.

my "hysteria" is based on facts brought to my attention, dude. and if youre not getting ANGRY......then i think you arent paying attention.....or paying too much attention to what rupert murdoch is telling you. im not trying to shift this thread to a lib VS con thread.......there are enough of those on RIU.......and like i said i understand the "concept" behind the bill. but do you really think that this bill was passed to help america's failing economical and social situation? its just a replay of the plutocracy that america experienced in the early 20th century. our elections can now be swayed (en-masse) by corporate interests. to me this is scary.

You really think that having a corporation paying unlimited sums of money to sway our government and buy our representatives will help the people of this country? its already happening to a degree, but now watch what happens!
I dont understand the train of thought coming from the right. oh wait i just got it! fuck up our country beyond belief while they are in office, then stand in the way of repairs that are needed to fix the problems when they are not in office. and advise anything that will fuck it up worse, then critisize the left for not taking their extremely bad advice that would damage our country even worse. to what end? so they can blame the left for fucking up our country?

How can you truly think this is a good idea? i dont care if your a righty or lefty, this is plain bad! if you think the corporations wont capitalize on this in the largest way possible then you are living in a dream! I have worked for a large corporation and know how they operate. they will tell you anything they can to make you think they are looking out for your best interest, but your really just a number. I was #331613. thats not my name!

(sound familliar to you fundamental christians?) Really just a number? the number of the beast? sound familiar? scared yet? and you support this? because the dems have the unions, and AARP? RESTRICT THOSE IF THEY ARE THE PROBLEM, DONT OPEN OUR GOVENMENT TO BE CONTROLLED BY A CORPORATION. I'm sure that could have been done.

kinda funny how the new world order has pulled the wool over all of your eyes, and you ended up supporting and put into place the exact thing that you are all scared of, one world government. cause thats exactly what we will have when the corporations start to exude their power over us and around the world. just wait, this is going to get ugly! hope yall have your shit straight, cause its coming down! and coming down fast!

exactly if big corporations were fulfilling their moral obligations to the country then i wouldnt mind thebill as much......but why give MORE power to the entities who treat us like cash-crops? they arent going to try to help anything, this fact has been proven over and over again. its just a further method for corporate america to tighten its choke-hold on us.

nope. sorry but you missed the point once again. probably due to my poor communication skills. i suppose i should say that in my personal opinion i have absolutely zero faith in either the Democrat or the Republican parties. i think its a huge scam anyway. i believe this because of the flaws of our electoral process: one of which is that we're voting in candidates from the same group of people. whether or not you choose blue or red, donkey or elephant, its still the same circus. and the circus owners are the only ones benefiting from any of it. you savvy? i dont claim to be a liberal or a conservative or a republican or a democrat.......in my eyes they are all one and the same. but now the game is even MORE fixed because RICH individuals (e.g. the Big-wigs of Exxon) can now voice their personal political views on TV, and i think we're all aware of the perversely pursuasive powers of television. now we're going to have ALOT more voters electing our leaders based on how funny the Halftime commercials were, as opposed to choosing a candidate based on his or her qualifications and political stance. long story short (too late.....) call it what you will, conservatism or liberalism, just give me a form of government that works for its people, not its elite.

Probably. But I think I know what you are saying. You just don't like this reality. The reality that the constitution prevents the government from controlling speech. Obama has said the he resents the constitution because all it does is place limits on the government and doesn't guarantee enough rights to individuals. I understand. People who want massive government find the constitution to be an obstacle. But the reality is that you are never going to change it and now this is settled law. Bummer.

This is easily overcome by the People. The only thing the US citizen needs to do is actually spend a little time getting to know each candidate, really find out where your vote is going to go, educate yourself properly and their won't be a need to be swayed by the Super Bowl ads or Idol commercials.

Unfortunately I fear it has come down to the largest group of sheep (Ignorant US Citizens) who take the Main Stream Media at their word. Why are the American Constituency so easily fooled?

What you had was govt. trying to SQUELCH free speech.

This decision is a victory for the ppl. It's a victory for the economy, which feeds, clothes and protects the ppl. No, it isn't the govt. .... no. It's business which is the engine.

The supreme court just protected the engine, and rightfully so.

ummm.....not quite. do you think that me saying the things that i say to my friends or on this forum or whatever would be able to compete with the voices of large companies? the answer is "no". now is that fair? in theory:sure it is. isnt it the american dream to start low and climb your way to the top? but does history show that large businesses will make decisions based on what is right for the people of america? no. history (recent or not) shows the exact opposite. so why would we the people want to facilitate the corporate agenda.....which i think is not in our (or the rest of the worlds) best interests. the majority of the general american public takes the bullshit they here on TV as scripture. with that much swaying power and the ability to affect the opinions of tens of millions of voters, do you really believe that we will ever have a fair election again? (based on the assumption that we had that before.......)

whos free speech was the government attempting to "squelch"?.......lets try this. corporation X is now an "american citizen". now that corp-X is a citizen, it can voice its political views to whomever it wants. okay.....sounds fine so far. but now that the corporation is a private citizen doesnt it too have to abide by laws? of course. do corporations always abide by laws? no they dont. if i, a private citizen, were to spray round-up on my fence to kill weeds on my side, but in doing that i also killed my neighbors ornamentals......wouldnt i have a civic obligation to remedy the situation? would i have a legal obligation to remedy the situation? both answers are "yes". so we give these corporations the same rights that we have, yet we dont hold them accountable for their actions. for instance take Monsanto. look at what they have done and are continuing to do to small farmers with all the genetically modified organisms they are introducing into the agricultural world. its putting farmers out of business all over the US due to entire crops being lost. if your neighbor did that to you would you have an issue with him or her? would you seek legal mediation? of course you would. we lock up dangerous inmates because they defaulted on their civic resposibility to society. how do you lock up a fictional entity who defaults on their civic responsibility? you cant. so in turn there are no checks and balances. its just business as usual......and last i heard, "its just business as usual" is not supposed to hold up in court.

yes i pretty much recapped the movie "the corporation" but i think it applies to this conversation.
