why did it take so long?

trade is a vital step in development too. when settlements come in to existence primarily as sites for the transfer of goods rather than as subsistence centers a huge step is taken towards writing, standard weights and measures, and warfare, the ultimate accelerant of civilization.

Its all about aliens.

I think at some point (Maybe even Roswell, 47) an alien spacecraft crashed landed here, and we beat his ass and robbed him, so to speak.

Then we reverse engineered that shit and discovered silicone, and from there we have been growing rapidly ever since.

the answer was:

POPULATION GROWTH

10 people can R&D something in a tenth the time that one person can. 100 years ago the earths population was a fraction of what it is today. more people = more smarter people. if einstien had a team of researchers, .... but he didn't, because he was the only genius around back then. double the population you double the number of geniuses on the earth to promote advancements.

"how much has organized religion held us back?"

Oh man! lol

I can already guess the way this'll go..

There's gonna be those that say "oh yeah, well there were scientists who believed!" - making the claim that had they not been religious they would have never made the contribution to humanity that they did. (something they couldn't possibly prove), and those who say "because of religion certain benefits arose" - which I completely agree with, such as religiously motivated wars that employed people to create new and more efficient ways to kill each other.

Fact is, religion is the cause of most of today's problems.

Don't kid yourself religion is philosophy, but your right about that.

Or rather Religion is the beta-science.

religion is a horrible thing when its forced on children. i had to fight tooth and nail to keep my children from getting baptised. it should be thier choice what they want to belive in when they are old enought to understand it. Yes i agree religion has definatly thrown a big wrench in the gears of human advancement. expetially those damn catholics....

Well people of religion were very key in the development of written communication. Without this, advancement would be stimied. On the other hand, wasn't just a few years ago that the Catholic Church acknowledged that Copernicus was right??!!

Religion is a double edged sword. It can help and it can hurt.

I am not a believer in current organized religion. In terms of what we truely understand with respect to the universe, creation, and science we are about as advanced as ants. That being said, what humankind has achieved since the industrial revolution is nothing short of amazing.

I hope us humans are around long enough to achieve what will be amzing to us in say in another milenium.

if any of you believe in e.t presence/influence on earth, google Vrillon. In the 70's a UK news broadcast was overrode by another transmitter and someone who said that his name was Vrillon started speaking and gave a great speech even if it wasn't alien. The audio's available as well as the transcript. And funny thing is, there's no logical explanation for it.

What the hell does that mean? Of courser there's logical explanations, a hoax being the most rational. The whole thing sounds fake.

i meant there that even the television station didn't know how or what caused it. and yeah it seems like a hoax but theres no evidence. so therefore it is true until proven false.

I see, so for any phenomena where there's no evidence, the default position is to accept things at fact value? Did you actually think about that before you typed it? :wall:
