i think we should have a planned progression toward a self reliant self power producing more agraian america with tower farming and other vertical type crop systems using human and animal power plus solar, hydro electric, wind, bio diesel, and even whats left of the "easy to get oil" and reorganizing cities and commerce...however we do it, we need to do it....i know this is leftist commie talk but some of this could be funded thru the nationalization of the oil industry in america...starting with bp assets in america. (sorry britain but you owe us for the whole keeping you from having to speak german thing)..plus, and i know this is hippie commie talk, but we are letting these type assholes rape OUR planet for ITS resources, so by proxy the oil is ours too...meaning we the people. im not a dreamer, im a realist and i know this wont happen until the Almighty Dollar says so, or mother nature slams man on the ass....yet i hope.

I believe that a film of oil would inhibit the formation/strengthening of a hurricane. Most of the damage would be from the oil washing ashore.
I agree that it's vital we exploit other forms of energy. Too bad that most everyone supports wind turbines & solar panels yet have a NIMBY attitude about them. Personally I'd love to have solar on my roof and a giant community wind turbine in the valley.

Not to get everyone all upset, but I now hear this oil gusher has a good chance of going on until after christmas! BP has tried all of their "new" ideas back in 1979, when the same thing happened in 200 ft of water (in the gulf, "IXTOC"). Same techniques, different names. example: instead of top hat it was called a sombrero. The only thing that worked was the releif bore. We have not progressed in our safety practices in respect to oil industry advancements. Government was not in bed with big oil, it was big oil! Bush and Cheney both are industry giants and played us ALL for their benefit, deregulation is like playing football with no rules, think no one will cheat?
I am 100% for regulation, especially in this industry. How about if they want to keep on drilling, they MUST drill 2 releif wells while drilling the main bore in case of a catastophe like this! I am very pessimistic about this, and have a feeling we will still be talking about how to stop it in 2011. We put a man on the moon, we explore space, we do so many technological things in this world and we cant stop a freaking oil leak in our ocean? WTF!! Priorities!

I agree with you absolutely, but it all comes back to money.
In a non-monetary system, if a group of technicians wanted to drill for oil they would do so not for the money, but to benefit society and themselves. When money is gone, a thus power is relinquished, we will see much more progressive action in these fields. I have said it before and I will say it again, governments job is to facilitate the search for truth, in a capitalist system you have relinquished the governments, and principally, the peoples power, BECAUSE.....it all comes down to money.
We have the power of 6,000,000,000 people, not the money of the respective compartments. If all were given the wealth of human existence this world would no longer be in chaos. To quote Bill Hicks, "Imagine newsbroadcasts where the host is just like, 'Alright folks, everything is going to work out!' with a shit eating grin on his face." That is the world of the future.

US Coast Guard chief Thad Allen has said that a containment cap placed on a blown-out well in the Gulf of Mexico is helping to contain the leaking oil.
Adm Allen said in a press conference BP had contained more than 14,800 barrels of oil in the past 24 hours.
"We continue to optimise production, make sure we can take as much oil out of that stream as we can right now," said Adm Allen.
President Barack Obama has criticised BP's chief executive over the spill.
Mr Obama was asked about comments Tony Hayward had made on behalf of BP in an interview with US network NBC.
Oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill has been found on beaches and wetlands along more than 100 miles (161 km) of coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle.
A containment cap was lowered over the well last week to siphon off the oil to a containment ship.
The oil has been leaking into the Gulf of Mexico since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and sank off the coast of the US state of Louisiana on 20 April.

i saw this. if you look at the feed, there's still a LOT of oil spilling. they're making progress. still have a long way to go.

does suck huh but not sure anyone could have avoided this eventually. it happened before and will happen again but it is still sad to see catastrophes like this.
i feel i have gained wisdom in my years by simply looking ahead when planning projects. before one even starts they should really take into consideration all possible events. it seems no one even thought of this one.
