What do you believe chewed those holes in the leaves if nothing has been eating the plants? Moon men maybe?
One way to keep critters from munching down plants is to put other critters on your plants that will munch down on the other munching critters. For larger munching critters praying mantis work wonders. They are like great white sharks that swim among plants, they will take out anything they come across. For smaller critters, like spider mites, ladybugs will do the trick. They are voracious eaters just like praying mantis and they will not pass up a meal if one happens to be in front of them.
If you live in an area with praying mantis just look around outside and catch a few and put them on your plants. If you have a garden supply store that sells them, purchase a few and free them on your plants. Before long if you want the praying mantis to remain alive you will have to catch things to feed them because nothing that is edible to them will remain on your plants for long.
