Jacks Classic No Calcium

Hey all,

I have been researching fertilizers for a few days and reading every bit of information I can get my hands on. I have read quite a few of uncle bens posts and one of his recommendations is jacks classic all purpose and bloom formula. After reading the label I noticed that it does not contain any calcium. I know that excess calcium can produce deficiencies in magnesium and potassium but this formula contains absolutely none. Why is this? I have a calcium/magnesium supplement anyway, just wondering what the rationale is. Are these lockouts caused relatively easily? Whats the best way to go about supplementing? At the first signs of a slight deficiency? I would love to get a discussion going for all to learn including myself.

It's intended for soil where calcium should already be present. Hydroponics is where it's important for a nute or a nute line to be near complete.
Ok thanks for the clarification. I use promix, which I believe has no nutrients at all. I add dolomite lime as a ph buffer and to add some magnesium and calcium. I'm guessing that when I see deficiencies they will most likely be calcium and magnesium and I should apply accordingly.

I know some push that JC but when you add it all up I'd say General Hydroponics stuff is about the same price and it perfect for pot. Sure the GH trio of grow/bloom/micro is about $35 but you can tailor it for vegging and bloom, not stuck to either one. That $35 buys 3 quarts of mix. You go through a lot of that JC just vegging.

I'm not sure where you live but General Hydroponics is not cheap where I live (Canada). I'm not really overly concerned about price as long as it works. My last grow I used sensi bloom a and b with big bud and overdrive. To be honest, I used to use 10-30-20 in flower and I had better results from it than the advanced package. Not sure what to say, numbers don't lie. The plants looked great the whole way through but at the end the weight just wasn't there. I am going to give advanced one more shot. My humidity was out of control so I have a good dehumidifier now, that may have been the problem. If not I'm going to go back to basics.

To be honest I haven't read the whole site. I just looked at the label and noticed it was absent. Either way I have a cal-mag supplement I can use if there ends up being a deficiency.

Correct. The major difference between soil fertilizers and hydro fertilizers are the fact that soil fertilizers are incomplete, assuming that some nutrients will be provided by the soil. Soil fertilizers typically have lower percentages of nitrate Nitrogen and higher percentages of Urea and Ammoniacal forms since beneficial microbes will convert these forms into nitrate N which the plant can then use.:weed:

That would be a very wrong statement, I use Jack's and have no problem with nice tight dank buds and the $5 tub last a long time on my second grow of MJ and this years tomato's and still have over 2/3 of it left

If you added dolomite lime, you should be GTG, no worries.

There is also calcium in the tap water Jack's is usually used with, another reason it's not added.

jacks has calcium
That label doesn't say anything about it having Calcium in it. I have 3 tubs of Jack's Classic and nowhere on the breakdown does it show the percentage of Calcium. Typically, soil ferts don't have any, or they have very little Calcium because the soil and water usually provide all the Calcium needed for plants to grow. Cannabis is pretty much a Calcium hog, especially in flowering, so sometimes some supplementation is required.:weed:

All Purpose 20-20-20 All fertilizer labels must follow the same format according to the state fertilizer laws. In All Purpose 20-20-20 the first number is for Nitrogen. This product contains 20% Nitrogen. The second number is for Phosphate. This product contains 20% Phosphorus as P2O5. The third number is for Potash. This product contains 20% Potassium as K2O. These three elements; Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium are the major elements in any plant food.

Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Calcium, Magnesium and Sulfur are the secondary or minor elements. The water, soil and air provide most of these elements to your plants.

Manganese, Iron, Copper, Boron, Zinc and Molybdenum are the trace or micronutrients. All Jack's Classic® products contain these trace elements. Although they are present in small amounts, they are just as important as the major and minor elements in making your plants grow. The guaranteed analysis on each package of fertilizer tells you how much is in each product. Jack's Classic® products contain these elements in a highly soluble form which means they will go completely into solution in water, and when applied to your plants, they will be taken up and utilized to make your plants grow to their fullest potential.

I think the Calcium Carbonate added is for buffering properties and is very slowly available to plants so it must make up less than 1% of the content or it should be listed on the Guaranteed analysis. We're both right I think. It has some Calcium but appears to be very little and in a form not readily available to plants.:weed:

Not only that but they also have a lab service that will test your water and soil and custom make a fertilizer just for you

http://www.jrpeterslab.com/

check out my nutes on a budget sig link to see pics of plants grown with Jack's
Don't they ask what plants you will be growing with your "custom fert"? That would be the only drawback I see to this. Very interesting though, very interesting indeed.:joint:
