What caused the scorching is a rather common, however regrettable
problem. You didn't screw the lamp in the whole way. What happens is the
lamp was screwed in so there was a hair thin gap between the socket and
lamp "EYES". Close enough for the current to jump across. Overtime,
this will heat the eye's up and eventually start melting(welding) them.
We have even gotten lamps and sockets back soo badly damaged that the base
of the lamp was welded to the socket and we could not get them separated.
Please make sure the lamp does not turn tighter at all when screwing the
lamps in. I know they seem fragile, but they are designed to be able to
be properly screwed in.
This most likely damaged the lamp and now it is (what we call) cycling.
Lamp will fire, but not consistently and output may or may not be
correct. Definitely not something that you or me would consider reliable.
