no problem....i try to help when i can...i see so many growers on here bash new growers for asking what they think are "stupid" questions.ive been a new grower before...when i first started i thought it was as simple and plant in some dirt and water...but its much more than that.and you can find some much conflicting info on the net...even in these threads.so i try to give advice on what ive used or seen used and work.not everyone can go out and get a 1000 watt hps and spend 20-30 bucks on just a bag of soil.you dont have to spend gobs of money to have a good grow...no you wont get what the big boys are using..but thats not the point of growing.work with what you got and you will get some good herb...id rather spend 80 bucks on a grow box and grow it myself then spend the 60 bucks every 3 days like im doing now to buy weed

hmmm thats not a bad idea...if its molded to fit and direct light better....i would only wonder about hot spots...thats probably aluminum its made out of....but i dont buy the hole hot spot thing anways....least not if your using cfl's......but since we got back into hoods...i made something about a week ago.nothing more than a cardboard box..folded to give me a good hood shape..just bend it about 4 inches between each bend till you get the shape...duct tape the outside on the folds.tossed in soome tin foil...nice and flat with no creases on the uppper inside of the hood...then i just made 2 flaps on the outside to mount the lights...got that nice and tight and mounted it to the top of my box.cant see it in this pic but since then i made two vented passages for the fans to pull almost all the heat out.can see the fans on the box on each side in the first pic...but i had to mount it first to measure the ducts..and im adding another cpu fan to the top of the box to pull heat straight out the top.but this costed me nothing..stuff i had laying around...works great...keeps my temps in the low 80's now..made it hella brighter.ive only got 4 cfls in it now..but i have 2 more y adapters and 4 more 65w cfls to install...just waiting till my next grow for that.

Nice homemade hood guy, I was gonna say "a lot of cardboard and duct tape" when he asked what'd be a good hood but i remembered the picture of the hood the guy made outta a baking pan. It looked great. lol But yours is infinatly awesomer. If you could somehow get a peice of plexi or something to put under the lights, then make some vent duct hole, that would be awesomist. Still, A+ on the ghetto hood.

yeah the hood works great...and i wanted something to use as a lens to put on the bottom of it so i could vent all the heat out...but i dont know what would be best to use....where to get it..and can i get it cut to the size i need.i thought about plexi...but not sure how much light would really get through it..im sure they use some special glass for the more expensive systems.and after the 2 i have going now finish up..im ripping the box apart....going to redo the hood..with mylar..and adding in a inline systems out of the top of the box....i took the 2 cppu fans off the side...i put them right on top of the box..cut holes through the top of the box right above the lights.with my grow box door open...it stays around 81f...when its closed it shoots up to 92+ f..and i turn off all the 6500k bubls when its closed and still gets that hot...after i moved the 2 fans to the top....ive got the box closed now....the temps started at 89....right now its at 84 and dropping....so i can now have the box closed 24/7 and have next to no heat

I also use an aluminum turkey pan as a hood and it works out great. No issues with hot spots or anything like that. The plants have gotten so much healthier since I added it. No wasted light.

I've just been creeping on here before but I just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. Good luck!

Thats a prett good idea with the cpu fans. IDK where you live but if there is a home depot, or a window glass repair place nearby (a place that fixes normal house windows),
you can have them cut you a piece of glass to your specs. Whenever a window gets broken around the house, I just go to home depot now and fix it myself. Just tell them what size glass you need and they'll cut it for you. even if its only 20 inches by 18 inches or whatever. As for light penetration, the amount must be negligible or else people wouldnt use them...i think

All I know is that since I popped for the air cooled sealed hood, I can keep a 400watt light, ten inches from the tops of my plants (i had to buy a blower of course). That gives me almost 38,000 lumens (optimally) prb 30,000 sustained, but shit, if the light were 2 ft away like its supposed to be without air cooled capabilities, my plants would only be getting 10,000 lumens (optimally)!! The air cooling helps substantially.

well....im kinda going a new route...building a new box...this is going to triple my space.taking an old stand up dresser..gutting it..putting in 2 inline fans for intake and exhuast.also getting 2 of the round reflective hood/socket clamp lights.going to toss the hood i made...with the inlines and having much more space...heat wont be much of an issue now.i think this box i have them in now is on its last leg...cut too many holes in it...plus the top of the box cant support the weight of the hood and all the lights....so i had to hook a line up to it and run it to the ceiling to keep the top from caving in.....so im going for a much more professinal box.mylar covered walls...real venting....so no light leaks.ill do some pics and make a new thread for its design....i tend to get creative and go mcgyver at times...so i thought id do an upgrade.....to be continued...muhahahaha

as for the roadrunner....its staying small for me...but it will be much bigger then the diesel ryder....this thing is about 6 inches tall right now...about a month and 1 week old...and smells like a skunk...it smells stronger then the diesel..and its half the diesels age.its very sensitive to nutes...its gotten burned from each feeding...take it really easy on the nutes till you get a good mix for it...and it flowers fast...it showed sex at 12 days old...started forming bud at about 3 1/2 weeks old

Sounds good man. Nothing wrong with mcguyvering... thats how I got by until I could afford the blower and the good light and hood. Venting is so important, its gotta be one of the top considerations. You gotta do it right or else it aint really worth it. I didnt bother, and shit I couldnt be happier. I know its a bad idea cause of contamination purposes, but I keep walking in my grow room just to look at it. Im so happy. i put in a lot of work outdoors tho so I feel i deserve it. hehe Ill be getting a cam soon so pics to follow the words.

My plants havent grown hardly at all since my last update, i've been trying out different combinations of soil, trying to find one that actually drains but i'm not having any luck because I cant find perlite anywhere. Is there anything else I can mix in with my potting soil that will improve drainage? I was thinking sand might work, but before I go out an collect sand I want to check to see if its a worthwhile idea.
