Just put some fresh kief in my pollen press and I was wondering how long it should be in there. I read 8 hours but I want to smoke now (fresh out).

i had a press once. i wasn't to clear on how to use it either. when i put the kief in it and pressed it and took it out it would still crumble. i think i heard it has to be a little warm. i dunno. just smoke the keif hell.

last video about making kief hash i watched mentioned compacting it, and then rolling it up tighly inside paper, this then went in the oven at a low temp to bake it into more of a solid. I don't recall the link though i'm afraid.

after loading and pressing my kief i drop the press into boiling hot water, after it cools down enough for you to handle it you'll find a nice solid chunck of hash

Sounds like the way to go, i would test it without kief in it just to make sure it doesn't leak.

Best way to do it is fill up the press with kief, tighten it down as much as possible, then get a heat blanket and wrap it in the blanket on low for 10-30 min, then compress, and just keep going but don't let it get hotter than you can touch with your hands or else you risk burning it (happened to me)

you should leave it for 24 hours gradually tightening it (give it time to cool at the end). You want all those crystals to be fused together... so yeah give it time bongsmilie

I'm sure the boiling water thing works also, but you'd want to tighten it while the keif is all melty/hot so letting it cool before you tighten doesnt really make sense?

The press is going to expand in hot water, no need to tighten further. I usually just fill mine, tighten it as best I can and put it in direct sunlight on my windowsill. By next day, it comes out solid and fused.

ya thats true

I usually get like a good 5 turns on my press, you saying that if you drop it in boiling water you will not be able to turn it at all because it has already compressed? If you can turn the press that means that it can be compacted more, correct?

I just find it hard to believe that a metal/plastic dowel press will expand THAT much in 220F water. I mean before I heat my press the dowels are like 10mm from each other, then by the end of all the tightening its like 1mm.

Maybe we are talking about two different presses. Mine has two pistons inside that barely have any clearance with the side wall. The metal pistons have much more mass than the end caps or sides and therefore will expand more than any other part. The expanding pistons should prove very hard to get additional turns on the end caps, but that is my experience. I've never been in a rush and needed to boil my press, but I do know how metal reacts to heat.

Mine is just the kind that has two rods compressed together by two nuts (so gay). Your guys' posts just made me think more. I never thought about boiling water or heat blankets but, while Im pressing, I always keep it in my pocket so my body heat will transfer to it. I guess boiling water is the next natural progression.
