I just got a roor ashcatcher for my baby 
An ash catcher is like another filter added before the bowl!
Its far easier (usually) to clean an ash catcher than an entire bong. So an ashcatcher also keeps all that nasty shit from getting in and dirtying up ALL the glass
On the back of that ash catcher you posted rzza, the glass on glass joint fits in the bong, and then the other higher female end is where the bowl goes.
The picture you posted is an inline ash catcher, sort of a funky design. The smoke fills up the first chamber, then moves into the round chamber through the slits into the water, then up and down and into the bong.
The gold ball on top of my bong is an ash catcher that doesnt filter, but works REALLY well. It keeps the roor glass and hurricane clean, and the ash catcher bulb takes less than 5 mins to clean it spotless

My piece was actually more than that
the roor ash catcher alone was almost $200. That's because it's .de ROOR, not .us ROOR. (It is said that the .de ROOR is a much finer product, like the bently of glass)
Sure is a nice ash catcher though! It's all worth it though, this is a piece I plan on giving to my kids (when I have some) when weed is legalized (by the time they grow up)

that thing is worth as much as my 16th birthday present ($1000 car). so because its .de is that why it appears to have a copper - ish color?

not quite though.de stands for deutchland, as in Germany. .us stands for United states.
ROOR (the glass company) was originally in Germany, but expanded to the US and set up shop in California I believe. They manufacture totally different products/lines. The German roor is supposed to be better, but by how much is opinion.
All the gold parts are Hurricane. A totally different glass company. I bought the hurricane 'goldeneye' which is fumed with silver nitrate, so as it gets more dirty it looks more solid gold. But it also has a glint of sliver in it.
The ash catcher, and downstems are ROOR, everything else is Hurricane.

Nah you don't have to spend more than $300 for a nice piece.
Honestly, I would say if you going to buy a piece, and you want something good that doesn't brake the bank: the $200-$350 range is the best
In that range you will find good brand name glass (quality), with a few nice features, and real thick smooth glass.
I bought a few $70-$140 glass bongs and hate them compared to a nice well done tube. Those bongs are just cheaply made, the glass isn't thick everywhere and it brakes easy..
Check out a website like www.aqualabtechnologies.com for some good glass for good prices...
HVY has nice glass, along with PHx, and a few others... Ill drop a few links for you for fun
I'm actually looking a little myself for another straight tube in the future

A bong is what you make of it. I collect pipes but as far as bongs go ,if your ripped it served its function. As far as flavor goes pipes all the way.

verde, i have a bong i bought for like 100 and its about ....shit im bad at this, three pounds-ish. its very thick glass... did i get a good deal or is it also garbage?
by tube, is that kinda like slang for bong or is it the straight tubed bongs like you guys have?
