Pot size test

For along time growers have been asking the same question....whats the diff in potting sizes? More times than not it ends up in a debate and someone suggest to just try it and see for themselves. Well for along time i myself wondered the diff and decided to try it and post results.

This will be done with 4 pots, two 1 gal, and two 2 gal with the same soil and same clones in all 4. Strain is Cinderella99, all 4 cuts were taken at the same time and received the same veg time. They were rooted in peat pucks and then re-potted into the pots shown and flipped to 12/12. The results were crazy, the 2gal pots took off with crazy branching and shot up quickly in height. The 1 gal pots were just as fast to flower but i noticed right away that they were not growing vertically very well. The bud mass seems smaller as well. This pic was taken on day 22 of 12/12, both sets of plants are very frosty and healthy, but the 1gal pots def lack the mass, stem strength and overall appearance that the larger ones do.

Even thought the results seem pretty clear i will continue to update this until harvest... height, wet and dry weights will be given.

My thoughts as of now, i think it would silly to skimp out on an extra gal of soil, mind you you can fit alot more 1 gal pots in a grow space, after seeing the results for myself your better off with less pots and more rootmass all day long :blsmoke:

This was only done as an experiment, no C99s were hurt in the making of this post

Very Interesting, Ive actually had quite the Different experience. I Tend to go for the one gallons in my case because i SOG, Although I do concentrate on the root health a lot more im guessing. I use alot of myco simulators and beneficial organism drenches In my soil...I think this plays a HUGE part in why my plants explode in size and yield. In the tests ive done, pot size really only makes a difference in your vegging, because you need the extra root space. Just my two pennies.

damn I feel like I should be switching pots now. Same period of time Bigger plants I could prolly still fit the same amount under my lights. I just transplanted them 2 days ago should I repot them in the bigger pots right away I do have them with me right now.

I found that I can fit the same number of 2gallon square pots as I can 1gallon round pots. Kinda off topic, sorry. The pictures speak volumes! I'm glad I went with 2 gallon square pots instead. Thank you for the time and effort that went into this.

Is it better to use taller containers or bigger diameter containers??

I have read taller ones are better because of the way plants react with gravity. I know my outdoor plants grow down and not out...mmmm i think i might have just answered my own question.... although i could be wrong, what do you think?

Nicely done!
I've been growing in 1.5 gal and have been thinking about 3 gal. You might have just made up my mind!

you forgot to tell us how long you vegged them for. cause it looks to me a bigger pot will give u a bigger plant and defeat the purpose of me veggin longer. so im wondering how long u vegged for to get them to that size in 22 days. to me it looks like they didnt get more then 3-4 days of veg by looking at the small ones...

I have an outdoor plant growing,
didnt want to repot at all.
Seeing this makes me want to get a bigger pot.
Dont know if I really should though.

Yes ive used 1gal for SoGs as well...but ive never ran em side by side...the point of this X was to see the actual yield diff in 1 and 2 gal pots. I agree with the soil amendments to, without a good base for the roots your wasting some time i think.

These were vegged in beer cups after the clones rooted.....veg time was about 3 weeks ( for the other guy who asked).....the size diff was seen after the 12/12 was started.....it actually kinda blew me away a lil to.

They got about 3 weeks of veg under a 24 watt T5 sunblaster, they were rooted in peat then moved to beed cups. The light was very close so they didnt gain much height in veg, just stacked nodes...which may explain the shortness. It was also a lil cold in the room so they didnt root like they usually do.

This was done for only one reason....just to see how much yield is lost or gained in 12/12 with 1 and 2 gal pots, this X had nothing to do with veg times or anything else. I didnt want to add to many variables to this, so i kept it simple. I know that i coulda had bigger plants if i vegged em in bigger pots.

I like to grow SoG, so this was to answer my own Q of what im losing or gaining with potsize. I have a limited grow space and i wanted to maximize it the best i can.

I actually have a HT article here with a med grower that grows in very shallow wide containers.....the plants are massive bushes. Article is called "Maximizing Medicine" Page 46 of the May 2010 issue. If you can find it, read it...its mindblowing!

I think the Gravity thing is Iffy. Cause More Gravity = More Strain on Deeper Soil? = Roots growing Width Wise in Least Resistance?
