Ok so my parents finally cut me off and i have to pay for everything now. Luckily i live in a 100% paid for house so i only have to pay for utilities, insurance and a phone plan. Anyways im getting my life savings and i want to get a credit card so i can sign up for a phone plan. Im getting a job and im responsible with my money. I know that i have like no credit cause ive never had a credit card. What are some things to look for when choosing a credit card. I dont travel by air often and id rather save money then get rewards. What should i do if i cant get a credit card due to no credit?

Its a reloadable pre-paid visa. Works anywhere Visa is accepted, which is pretty much everywhere. They charge you $3 to load money to the card, however if you have direct deposit to it, reloads that way are free. I like this because you cant spend what isnt on the card. Plus, no credit required, just go buy one. No annual fees either. I also get discounts on gas now with it.

The only advice I have via credit cards is stay away from ones with interest rates that are high. Pay off the balance every month. If you dont, it'll cost you much, much more, like double sometimes of what you paid in the first place.

If you pay off the balance every month then it doesnt matter who you get a card with, but watch out for annual fees and fees and fees and the interest rate if you cant pay it off. :)

If you have a good job and are responsible with money you probably have a bank account where your bank will gladly open a charge card account for you too!

The only CC anyone should ever have is one in which you pay the balance off every month no and ifs or butts......If you are as smart with your cash as you say you are you will understand.

Check out the student credit cards. They generally have a lower interest rate (also lower limits). Is there any reason you want to get a credit card besides the phone plan? I'd like to try going the rest of my life without ever owning another credit card.

Personally I think the best option is to open a free checking account with no fees, do direct deposit from your job if available and just use a debit card. Then you won't spend money you don't have. Putting utilities and stuff in your name and paying bills on time builds up credit slowly. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that they need to finance something or pay interest to build credit. F that, just save up by acting like you have payments and then pay cash.

Instead of a credit card, I took out a small loan for a MacBook Pro. I had the money to buy it, but from my local credit union my capital + interest was only $61/mo for 2 years. Real easy payments to make, my credit went up because of it, and I got something I wanted

Do banks really have free checking anymore? Most are fee based, and have been converting to it for the last few years after they suckered everyone in with free accounts................ Student accounts are usually free at any bank still...

btw walmart cards have a $7500 limit on them (you can reload as often as you like, just cant put MORE than $7500 on the card)...........

Would be nice. Eventually you need to build some kind of credit though. I went for years without ever owning one, but things in life can and do come up where you absolutely need one. Many hotels don't rent rooms without them, car rentals for example.

Not saying go get one and go crazy, but it sure is nice to know that if I am travelling across the country, I'm in an accident, out of province stranded in some strange town that I have a cushion to fall back on. If I have to rent a vehicle, and get a room, it makes things so much easier.

Good to have one for backup.

As far as having zero credit....it is harder for you with zero credit to get a card than someone who has bad credit. What I did was I went to the bank spoke to a loans officer, and expressed my need for one. Showed him how much I make an hour. He told me that I have ZERO credit. We worked out a deal where I purchased a 3yr.500$ GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate). All I needed was a 500$ card, so it was basically collateral. What I did to quickly build on that card, was to purchase items that I knew I had the money for, put the money aside and pay the VISA off every month. Within 6 months they doubled my limit to 1000 without me ever asking them to. Then within 2 years, without asking ever, my limit is now 5000$.

As I have a zero, or near zero balance every month, I have a nice 5000 dollar limit card that should get me out of any day to day problems that might arise.
If you wanted, you could probably have your limit boosted quicker than I did, by actually asking to have it raised.

Generally, banks will try to work with you, but something has to sweeten the pot (tee hee:-D ) for them.
Just remember, that having your credit limit raised can be a double edged sword.

Take care, and good luck.

also, its sometimes alot harder, near impossible, to just go out and get a major credit card like a visa or master card, without having some kind of credit first.. the way i did it was to get a store card first, like say i think my first card was a boscov's.. buy a few things on that card.. don't pay it off every month.. credit card companies want to see you carrying a debt.. not much, but buy a few small things on it, pay over the minimum, but not the whole thing off for about three months, than pay it off... after about six months of this, you will easily be able to get say a visa or a mastercard or whichever one you like..

For a couple years there the banks were not issuing much credit.

It might just be me but I have been starting to receive a bunch of new CC offers in the mail. I think the credit situation is improving.

I think the point of him getting a credit card is so he can pay for things that he dosent have the money for yet. I mean, why else get a credit card? And to whoever said only use your debit card. BAD idea. Pay in cash whenever you can, its alot easier to swipe plastic then to hand over green..if ya know what i mean

Heh guess it just depends on the person, I do far worse with cash in hand personally, I spend that shit like it's gonna be worthless the next day. But when we have it in the bank I don't even think about it. =)
