i'll just cut it short and say you win!!!@!!! your right thers no way I would be able to handle the average footballer regiment. thats not to say tho, I would LOVE the same opportunities they get for FREE. I would love nothing more than someone paying for my gym fees and workout routines and diet, all because I'm part of some team that get paid obscene amounts of money to play a children's game.

hey remove the helmets in football, and I'll watch, I'll be the most avid fan.

people who have played these games appreciate the necessary preparation and work at honing these skills. thats why we watch and are completely mesmorized by the level of play. its not the game, its the level of skill that professionals possess at playing that game thats keeps us glued to the screen.

And this is why many people choose not to watch sports, because instead we're mesmerized that people actually get paid that much money honing useless skills to play a GAME. I don't give a damn how dangerous the game is because it's voluntary anyways and still a game no matter how you put it.

I agree with McGreen. Our armed forces go through much more intense training, operate in a much more hazardous environment, get less recognition and respect, get paid MUCH less doing it, and they're actually USEFUL to society during and after their job is done.

Imagine what could be done if we put that kind of glorious celebrity status and multimillion dollar incentive behind doing things that better our living sitiuation instead of useless shit that distracts us physically, mentally, and monetarily from more important matters.

you have typical "you guys owe me something" attitudes. they get paid all that money because people are willing to spend money to see them. if you perfect your trade, whatever it is, you have a good chance to become a very wealthy person.

nobody is going to pay to watch you and i pay football. they are willing to pay the best football players in the world.

same with your job, unless in a union. those fucks dont get rewarded for being better. they get grievencs filed against them because they are making the slouches look bad. in other words, bass ackwards. those players deserve every penny and they certainly earn it.

furthur more almost every athlete has a substantial anoumt of money tied up in a charity. athletes do amaxing things like curing desease, feeding homeless, feeding starving nations. they dont just sit on a computer and bitch because people make too much money. you guys are very uneducated as to how things get done. those well paid athletes help more people in one minute than you losers will help in your lifetime. there i said it.

army does get combat pay. the reason they get paid what they do is that the army has determined that is the pay to make people run into bullets. if nobody signed up, then they offer bonuses. the army guy above should understand this because manning shortages are fixed by bonus incentives. nobody forces anybody to be shot at in the army. it has been done before but hasent been done in a long time. you dont like getting shot at, get out of the military.

"the world owes me something" is an attitude that most achievers possess

in the NFL- chances are players possess the attitude that drives competition- "my contenders owe me respect"

....let me show/prove this...the best way I know how...by strapping plastic-ladden padding all over myself while running around a field harnessing a ball and hitting people.

as far as my eye can see, this offers nothing useful to society other than cheap entertainment...yet ppl seem sorta into that... :?

eh not for me

no, i believe thats the attitude most leeches possess. just try taking a welfare check away from a mother with 4 kids to different fathers. or cut off social security checks to the 25 year old who has "social anxiety disorder". you wanna see bitching to the highest degree. the dregs of society are the ones that think somebody owes them something. not the people who work their asses off. achievers know if they want more, they have to work harder.

all athletes work their balls off, or snappers in the case of the uconn womens basketball team, and EARN respect from their competitors.

nobody said you have to watch, i am just trying to explain why 100's of miliions of us do.

So I'm assuming you feel similarly about Snookie, the Situation and Pauly D too? They "worked their asses off" to get to where they are, right? Millions of people watch them.. They offer the same kind of entertainment to society as sports figures do.

I've never been a sports fan myself and never fully understood their mass appeal.

But hey, give 'em what they want, right?

To a certain extent, sure. But what about the gladiator games? I'm positive more than a few people would pay $50/ppv to see something like that, right? The line must be drawn somewhere. Whose to say things like sports on such levels of mass appeal, Jersey Shore, Jerry Springer, etc. any of that stuff that doesn't actually kill people doesn't do any harm?

I'm of the opinion certain things do cause harm to our society. Having massive amounts of people occupy their own private time with pointless activities (which would include sports) harms society, in that they could be accomplishing other things that actively benefit society, like solving the economic problems, focusing on decreasing corruption in government, getting humanitarian aid to countries that need it, solving the immigration problem, decreasing the number of nuclear arms...

I'm not saying sports are bad, I'm not saying Jersey Shore is bad in and of themselves. I'm saying the idolization of such things is what's bad. And the self righteous attitudes it creates to justify it is bad. Giving athletes extravagant amounts of money for their skills is bad. In a way it's a form of prostitution, and I believe it sends the wrong message to society.

Damn pad, even the commies allow private time. they aren't always working.

To whomever:

The average career of an NFL player is less than 5 years.

All professional atheletes get injured..

They make enormous sums of money because the owners of said franchises earn even more.

You can thank unions for the rise in athletes salaries.

Babe Ruth was paid more than the president of the time.

Pro sports provides an outlet to people just like this place provides an outlet to others.

I personally love the strategies involved in sports.

And lastly:

The hardest thing to do in pro sports is hit a 100 mph fastball. It takes amazing amounts of skill. Skill you can't imagine.

imho...it's kind of lame, people so drawn into sports, some folks at work well that's all i hear them talk about, when the game is on the television they start acting super gay with each other, nothing wrong with gay folks whatever, but these dudes say they're straight and they straight up turn gay when their team is playing, never seen anything like it aside from hardcore sports fans

Yeah, like I said, I don't think there's anything wrong with watching or playing sports, just the fanatical side of it is what bothers me. The massive amounts of money the players/coaches/announcers, even the cheerleaders get paid... I think it's crazy.

Imagine it was rock/paper/scissors instead, or jenga, or connect 4. It wouldn't make much sense to idolize such things, right?

I think you missed a few of my points bro..

1. Jersey Shore - do they deserve the salaries they receive as well? I believe you will answer no, they don't. If you answer no, you will be contradicting your own justification for athletes salaries. If you answer yes, I'd love to hear your reasons why.

2. Couldn't millions of people be spending their time more constructively? Agreed with you that that's really none of my business, it's just more of an observation about society that I made. I think it would be better if all those millions of people so occupied with sports were doing something else, perhaps thinking about solving some of the problems I went over earlier. You've gotta agree with that, right?

3. What makes any professional sport any more reasonable/rational/or logical to consider professional? I find it similar to the different organized religions - all of them are equally as irrational and illogical, just like sports and board games and video games and anything like that... they all seem equally as irrational to idolize on the level professional sports are today.

4. Take the "obsession with sports" further... I believe one of your counter-points earlier was "well if people want to pay for it, there will be people who will always provide it" - I brought up the gladiator games, and how there are people who'd be glad to pay to see that... Where's the line? Physical harm? Apparently not, as already agreed upon, athletes get fucked up in their sports all the time. Death? Intent of death? Intent of human death? Another problem I see from where I sit is conflict of interest. The people responsible for putting these events on have amassed enormous fortunes. You see what they want you to see. You tune in, they keep providing it.

One other thing, honest question... What do you think would change if instead of sports it was science or something else equally as beneficial academically? Better or worse for the world?

I'd appreciate a response to each of those points if you've got the time. I'm just chillin' at 2am wide awake and stoned as fuck with 2 days of work off :D

It sucks having to cheer for the away team all the time. I don't know anyone on OUR team, but have have friends and family on others. So confusing.

Im 40, Ive been involved w/ sports on some level from age 5 up to Semi Pro football. I also encourage my 2 boys to be involved in sports. I encourage, i dont push, although they both agree that "soccer is a girls sport, i dont wanna play soccer dad"....Makes me proud :-)

I encourage their involvement in sports for a few reasons:
1. Physical activity, keep your kids off the couch and the fucking XBox 24/7...the world has enough fatassed little kids, dont let your kid be diabetic at age 10
2. Competition, the world is a competitive place. I want them to learn the idea of working for what you want, nothing worth anything comes for free.
3. Teamwork
4. Discipline

As far as what athletes get paid. Thats a free market thing, they are worth whatever someone is willing to pay them.

l played soccer for over 6 years, and just because some overgrown fool with a pituitary problem isn't manhandling you doesn't mean its a girls sport.
