i would definitely LOVE to see a trained half scrog (pulling colas/tops up to the edge of the tent and screening them/or even just lst) and then grow the middles super cropped or topped or hell even grown straight if indica after about 2-4 weeks of veg and end up with an extended veg sog with scrog screens/lst around the edge without needed tons of plants and im sure that you could make that pop off with some 600 and turn those tents into a jungle. im thinking if you add to many plants humidty is gonna become a proplem later on and i have never tent grown but it seems like that would work. id really like to know what genetic your working with, and clone vs seed. but i am totlly pumped to see you get started and i hope you have an awesome NEW year. stay medicated.

As expected, there are some issues with this setup:

  1. HEAT
  2. HUMIDITY

HEAT: The 600 watt Adjust-a-Wings run too hot for a tent this size with just fresh-air cooling. I have a few options...

  1. Actively cool the tents using AC.
  2. Run my ballasts at 75% (450w), or get lower wattage lights.
  3. Run sealed air-cooled hoods.

HUMIDITY: When the lights go out, humidity skyrockets (as expected). The humidity setpoint is triggered on the Sentinel and the intake/exhaust fans kick in; exhausting the humid air, but also bringing in cool, and often humid air from outside. This will not work to consistently lower humidity. This problem will be compounded with plant material. I have a few options...

  1. Actively dehumidify the tents using dehumidifiers.
  2. Install an elaborate secondary intake system using electronic dampers and more ducting to switch the intake air from outside to warmer, dryer, interior air -- and back again as needed.
  3. Install heaters in the tents.

I need to get the environment correct to move forward. What is the best way to handle this? I welcome input. I will let you know how I leap over these environmental hurdles in future posts.
Duh - I missed an obvious option for additional cooling. While I won't use this method, I thought I should mention it: Increase the intake and exhaust rate CFM's. Currently, with the pressure balanced on the 6" exhaust to match the intake of the 4", I am doing an air exchange about once every 60 - 75 seconds. I might be able to keep up with the cooling needs of the Adjust-a-Wings by doing a complete air exchange 3 times a minute. Let's see... if the tents are about 90 cu ft each, I would need an intake fan of about 600CFM plus the overhead caused by ducting, filters, etc. That calls for an 8" fan for intake, and I would need to balance that with another 8" exhaust fan. Hmmm - this is a good option -- but I can't stand the thought of redoing my entire HVAC! haha Simply adding a 6" intake fan may help - as I have overhead on the exhaust fan (it is on a speed controller to balance the positive pressure produced by the intake), but I still fear it will be quite hot on all but the coolest nights.

I didn't have any matching sealed 6" hoods lying around, but I am going to purchase a pair. Air cooling the hoods, for now, is going to be the best solution for me. I will simply exhaust through the hoods. This loses me some flexibility, as my exhaust and intake will, basically need to run all the while the lights are on... This will be OK. On cold nights with the lights on, the temps may get below my 75 degree setpoint in the tents, but not for long as the hoods will heat up quickly without air cooling and cause the fans to kick back on. Ideally, I should add a dedicated fan for cooling the lights. I will do some tests with the air cooled hoods to see how things go first.

Once I test the cooled hoods, I will post the results as a comparison with the Adjust-a-Wings. We will be able to see EXACTLY how much cooler sealed hoods run - as the hoods will be the only changed variable. That will be fun! OK - I guess I'm getting pretty nerdy here. I warned ya, this thread isn't for everyone! haha

I have plant material coming in next week too... OhGee! Things are looking good as I start the New Year!

Yeah Dick! I love input like that; and I like your suggestions... This is the first run flowering in a tent for me too!

As for genetics, I will not be using my own this run, but relying on my local nursery. They have quite a few things available, including several of the current OG cuts everybody has (Larry, Tahoe, Skywalker, Fire). I am most familiar with OG, so I will likely go with that... though I'm tempted by the Sour Diesel, the Pre98 Bubba (which I also am familiar with), and something a friend has been claiming called Sour Double (a Sour Kush).

I was going to compare a couple nutrient lines on the same strain, but I think I may do an OG comparison with Larry, and one of the other OG cuts. If the SFV becomes available, I will go with all of that and compare nutes or pot types, etc. I don't want to get too crazy with the initial tent run. I like to get through a turn in a new setup before I get jazzy with the grow method.

I currently have a couple Moms of 'The OG' that will be ready to cut from in another few weeks... I will run with my own genetics (pictured above) (unless I find something better in the meantime) for subsequent tent runs.

I have some incredible seeds too. I will NEED to journal my seed journey, but that is another project entirely!

Thanks again for your input!

Hello, I am thinking of running Stinkbuds aero/NFT setup in a tent or 2. My question is how well can you block light on one side from the other. Lets say I got a 7' long tent and wanted to turn 3.5' of it into the clone/veg area, how well could you hang something to block the light of the flowering side? Also, I really need to go stealth. How is the odor control with your setups (nice btw)?

I am very new to growing, even newer to tents. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

ive seen a dude separate his tent into two parts before so it is do-able you would just have to take the time to think it out more by yourself. as for the odor control part I own a DR120 (4x4) and my carbon filter leaves no smell at all :D

Howdy!

Very interested in this one, also!
I had just got a DR120P and had on order a DR120W..... They discontinued the W model, so I got another P model.

Cheers,

Hello, I am thinking of running Stinkbuds aero/NFT setup in a tent or 2.
Cool. A Stinkbud type of setup works well in a tent because you can custom fit it to any size. If you devise a way to get the res outside of the tent - that is even better. With the res in the tent, you will have to be sure your temps are in check (need to keep res as cool as possible). I came up with my own versions of the Stinkbud machines. The best tasting boo I have ever grown came out of a Stinkbud style aero/nft unit. Going the whole way in a single 2" net cup just rocks. Aero is the best - but you need a solid environment and a good system.

Healthy roots are the key to a good start in the Stink system.

Of the methods I have tried, OG grown using an Aero/NFT setup produces the best tasting medicine.

Not very well at all! Don't try it. Tents come in all sizes - just get two tents; one dedicated for flower and one for veg. NOTE: Tents are not 100% light proof. You need to keep the lights low in the room when it is night time in the tent.

Also, I really need to go stealth. How is the odor control with your setups (nice btw)?
There is no odor control in my setup... well not really. I do exhaust out from the highest point of the house (over the heads of most), but I am not running any carbon filters, etc. on the way out. I am relying upon the local vegetation to mask the smell; that and a kind wind...

I am very new to growing, even newer to tents. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Have fun with it! The crew on the SB thread and website can likely answer all questions you have with the Stink setup and maintenance. There are several tent growers there too. This is my first run using a tent to flower, but I have veg'd in them for years, and have seen many a friend get through a tented harvest successfully. You will too!

Thanks for the kind words. Keep me posted on your work.

Hey Lt. Dan. So you have a couple DR120P's? Nice - how are they workin' for ya? Yeah - it took me a few tries to locate a second DR150W.

I only have one set up at the moment.... as slow as I am, I might get the other set up by next Christmas, lol....... or maybe by next week :)

Any updates man??
Thanks for asking. I had a little delay, cause I love a good deal!

I found a great deal on a couple new hoods - but it took me awhile to actually get in touch with the seller... I am going to pick them up tomorrow - along with some new bulbs. Hopefully, I will have time to get them setup and snap a couple pics. Once setup, I will then run some tests and post a temp/humidity comparison between open and closed hoods.

I pulled out a couple Botanicare 2 x 4 trays and cleaned them with a 10% bleach solution. One is kind of yellowed but they are still in great condition and will function as new.

The clones are ready to go too. I will start all 16 in one tent. I will be up by weeks end.

The Adjust-a-Wings ran too hot in the DR150W's, so I opted for cooled hoods to see if I could keep temps down to a reasonable level. I found a great deal on some LoomCool hoods from C.A.P. They are made in China, but they are serviceable, and the price was ridiculous! I also scored some of the new 600MH bulbs from MaxLume. I am anxious to try these bulbs; finally a 600 watt MH bulb that is not a conversion -- and the price is right too.

The LumeCool hoods and MaxLume bulbs are the budget growers dream.

This time, these fence posts will NOT be used as aeroponic/NFT grow chambers.

I'll post setup pics and more tomorrow.

awesome bro good luck + rep
Thanks. I checked your setup too. Nice. I like what your doing with that OG; the rockwool and the trellis. I see you've grown the Geezy before! Is that the actual Secret Jardin trellis accessory? I like it. I'm going to use Botanicare trellis.

I checked your tent pics - and you too are exhausting through your hoods... So, I guess your exhaust fan is on constantly? Does that work OK? Normally, I like to dedicate a fan and duct run for the lights.

I got the new lights setup; C.A.P. LumeCool hoods with MaxLume 600w MH bulbs to start. I'm really pleased with the hoods for the price ($50 a hood out the door - new - 5yr warranty!). They are a little clunky - and the finish is less than perfect. But the glass is nice, they seem strong, and they seal up tight. Compared to Adjust-a-Wings, they weigh a ton! My Quantum ballasts fired these new MH bulbs without incidence. I will take some light readings to document their output new... and then see if it degrades much over the course of a cycle.

Here are some initial setup pics.
