Looks like an interesting thread to watch while I am reading so much about my favorite plant! I had a mushroom kit one time back in the late 80's, but never got around to messing with it because it looked like it would be difficult and I didn't have the time back then. Subbed for the duration!

Yes, the light on jars while they are turning into cakes (mycellium growth) you want the jars in the dark. The light can induce pinning, which you dont want in the jar, that's for after. A set of white christmas tree lights is all you need for light. Just like a CFL/MH except a lot lower in power.

measure out some distilled h2o and add 4-5% karo (light corn syrup), so 95-96% h2o with the rest karo. Measure it with a scale it is easier and more accurate. The proportions need to be accurate. 1ml=1g. 96ml/g h2o + 4ml/g karo = 100ml/g of lc.

Use what ever style ports and lids usually 1 or 2 holes, I use 1/4", and topwith foil and pc at 15psi 20 - 25 minutes, no more as the sugars will crystalize making it harder to see contams. When cooled, shoot each jar with 1cc spore solution, set aside and should see growth in 2 weeks or less. Will look like clumped jizz, if it is kinda stringy it may be contam. Shoot up whatever jars you are using.

Do up a bunch so you increase your chances of success, but don't shoot more then 1cc of spore solution, more is not better and the proportions need to be pretty exact.

I imagine you just use a new syringe to suck it up and use the same way as a "spore syringe"...

Now I wonder if one could bypass the "BRF Cake in the Jar thing"...

Making large cakes inside "my double tubs"...
And going straight from LC to Large Cake?

If I make sure everything is clean, I think I would like having several tubs, with 1 large cake each...

Also, since you are now working with a live culture, is there a benefit is using LOTS of LC on a large cake, with the idea that it would spread and fill faster...lol...

And low watt light to fruit @ 70F/21C...

I have no link.. just the kit I ordered is set up that way... I didn't question it because of the low temps here, and the fact that the water will do a better job than air at holding a more stable temperature...

You still need to start in jars, and with brf you need 1/2 pints like the one in the pic with no shoulders so that you will be able to pop out the cakes when done. With lc you get much faster completion because it is already live mycelium- it doesn't need to germinate like spores do because it already did. Now if you use grain in quart jars that have been pc'd, you can use a bunch of lc and have superfast colonization. I have seen peeps that have gotten quart jars done in like 5 days ( using like 20cc of lc which I have never done), but you need to do some first with like 4cc per jar to get the idea. Using lc you want your grain to be a bit dry because you are adding liquid, otherwise it could stall due to too much moisture in the jar.

As far as syringes, a 16 gauge or larger is better to have using lc because it is kind of thick and usually spore syringes you use are 18 gauge. I buy mine at a farm and family type store because the sell them to peeps for their livestock innocs. I get 35cc syring and a 16 gauge needle for like 2 bucks. Re-use them by sterilizing with boiling water. I put alot of these teks with pics in my thread.

Shitake are totally different from cubes and the log is really the way to go. Even the nomenclature is different. You can buy the logs and pre-innoculated plugs which most peeps do. Cubes are easier then any other mush to grow.

Can't remember what they call shittake pins. You need a certain tree they prefer oak I think.
