i already wrote my senator:

Hello,
My name is -REDACTED- and I am writing in regards to Senate Bill #17. This bill would make it illegal for a person to organize a "Marihuana Club" that generates a fee for membership, amongst other restrictions. I am completely opposed to such a law as I believe it infringes on protections provided in the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act of 2008. These "clubs" are very necessary to help provide safe access to medical marihuana for people who may not understand how to go about acquiring their medication. Compassion clubs typically charge a very low membership ($10-15 yearly). If my mother needed to procure marihuana I would much rather it be from an established, safe, and reputable place. If these places did not exist there is the strong possibility patients would have to turn to street dealers with increased risk to their health or safety. I understand that it says nothing about a place that generates no fees or charges a membership. I would like to point out that the Rotary Clubs, VFW's, Moose Lodge's, and other various civic club type organizations would cease to exist if they could not generate fees of some sort. Thank you for your consideration, and please consider the 63% of voters that originally passed the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act. People will remember the way government representatives treat the family and loved ones, and their voting will reflect that.

Here's the guy who introduced it. Good to see that we're getting all of Michigan's problems straightened out right away.

http://www.senate.michigan.gov/gop/senators/about.asp?District=24

Here are all the members of the committee this was referred to. Magically enough, Senator Jones is on this committee as well.

HEALTH POLICY: Senators Marleau (C), Robertson (VC), Emmons, Hune, Jones, Schuitmaker, Warren (MVC) and Gleason Clerk: Traci Gorman, Phone: 373-5312

These are the offices we need to contact. The biggest thing here that worries me is that Jim Marleau is from Senate district 12 in Oakland county where all the raids and what have you have been happening. We need at least 4 votes to keep this godawful bill in committee. We can count on Senator Warren and Gleason. Jones is out, Marleau is a toss up, that leaves us Robertson, Emmons, Hune, and Schuitmaker. Out of those I think Judy Emmons is the most reasonable one of the bunch, but we need to hammer everybody.

Just curious as to why you called your congressional representatives. They don't have anything to do with this legislation and will never see or vote on it. The only ones who have a say are the state house, state senate (the health committees most importantly) and the governor's office.

Weather they vote or not they are representatives of my district and they have power. The more doors you beat on the better off we are in the long run I would think. And if they haven't seen or heard about it they will!

The only reason I bring it up is that I know people who work for congressional staff offices and they don't pay any attention to state matters because essentially, members of congress won't comment on things that they don't have to comment on. So someone answers the phone and takes your call, then asks what you want, you give your take on this issue and they either throw it into a file as in "another person called about X issue" or it's discarded and that's it. They may have power to influence, but they aren't going to take up this fight. Rest assured, the member of congress will never hear your cry.

There's only 8 doors that need to get beat on unless this thing leaves committee and it's only, those in the committee. Fib a little bit and say you live in their district if you have to in order to make your point stronger.

Unrelated, I really like the way your mi420care website looks, really nice use of wordpress!

silly downstate politicians. Thats what you get with democrats.

Here is my POV

I grow my own and what little overages I do have are properly dispensed around "my group."

I have never nor will I ever go into a dispensary and pay their bloated prices or try and sell my goods to them. This is medicine and it has been made legal under that understanding.

Trying to profit for medical marijuana is plain wrong until everyone that suffers has been taken care of.

Am I on my soap box, Fuck Yes!! I hate dispensary's and the unwanted attention they bring, last week in Traverse City one was broken into.
I am 100% backing the patients right to grow their own and what they do with it after that is their decision.

But on the other hand I agree with no more regulation that does not lead to legalization and decriminalization.

you know I'm basically in the same boat myself but the few times I have walked into a dispensary it is combat veterans and senior citizens filling the place, so really they do offer a good service to the community like it or not - not everyone is so blessed as we are as to have our own grows and such.

Right on bro, this is EXACTLY how I feel!
I will never step foot into one of those dispensaries, as long as I can provide myself with the medicine that I require. I like to keep a low profile and plan to keep it that way.

But, that point aside...
The bill is complete BS for those who do go to the dispensaries.

Well ive never even seen a dispensary, so i cant argue one way or the other but, seems to me that even if the bill passes you will still be able to legally grow and smoke so..... Idk. My state sucks, i dont have any of those freedoms, so maybe you cant have your cake and eat it too, but you should be thankful for what freedoms you do have. If the feds would open there eyes to the truth, it would all be legalized anyway. but untill then.....

I am very thankful for the freedoms that we have here in Michigan, it's just bullshit that this law was just proposed on now they're trying to take it away in less than 1 year. But yes, like you said, I'll still be able to grow so it doesn't affect me too much.

not everyone knows where to get their meds from, and some people would rather go to a retail place to pick up there meds. not to mention this isnt just about dispensaries, this is going to be a ban on compassion clubs as well... aka marijuana clubs...
