Many modern sex slaves are told they will be given a better life and make plenty of money washing dishes or cleaning house and so they voluntarily join the valiant free marketeers only to get raped over and over so said free marketeer can make a few bucks (and the child, ofc, has no way out at this point). Is this not the capitalism you speak of? If you are really so blind that you favor removing child labor laws, exposing your very children to these activities than you really are hopeless.

All I here is heated emotion. NOthing you are saying has any sort of Historical or philosophical weight to it. The reason this world is burning it's self down is because people like yourself (and me long ago) are afraid of freedom and respond to emotional stimuli accepting what amount to Pro-Statist superstitions. We need to be objective about truth and realize that nothing is perfect ( not even Capitalism) but some systems create more freedom and prosperity than other and Free markets have yet to be topped in making our existence and the human condition better. Even for the developing world.

Reports regarding child labor surface periodically. Children crawling in mines, faces ashen, body deformed. The agile fingers of famished infants weaving soccer balls for their more privileged counterparts in the USA. Tiny figures huddled in sweatshops, toiling in unspeakable conditions. It is all heart-rending and it gave rise to a veritable not-so-cottage industry of activists, commentators, legal eagles, scholars, and opportunistically sympathetic politicians.

Because they cannot make informed choices, they cannot be part of a free market because they will inevitably end up in these kinds of situations. By this logic, child labor laws actually protect the interests of all in a free market by protecting those that lack the information to participate in said market. That is my entire point.

If you are arguing that children are not as sophisticated as adult then I would have to agree and this is a moot issue. But you act as if there are herds of unattended children that will be rounded up and thrown into slave camps if we didn't have child labor laws. This is just not the case. MAny (if not all) the children who worked long hours in shops in preindustrial America were doing so because it was much easier and safer than plowing the fields or working the gins and combines at home.

My kids plow the fields, sure hope they never get ran over by the tractor or ripped to pieces by an auger ( some Kid in Iowa lost both arms to one). Or back up into a power line, get kicked by a mule. Hey Farming is only the 3rd most dangerous job in the USA. Cops got it easy compared to my kids. They get a lot more than my Kid's $5 a week. And they don't have to get up at the crack of daylight either, sleeping in until 6:30 is for the lazy people.

actually, i was busy cooking shabot dinner for my wife who saw patients all day while i lounged about at home, as per the usual.

us jews are finicky about that sundown on friday thing.
