I think your both right. Obviously there is risk in everything, even crossing the street, but this sort of thing should NOT have happened. I have no idea what sort of mechanical safety checks were made to the plane before the show... but obviously somebody dropped the ball.

And wasn't the plane a P51? Perhaps planes that antiquated shouldn't be used for these high flying stunt shows?

the day after the reno accident another pilot died in a crash at another air show in west virginia. no spectator deaths, though. me and a buddy were having a conversation about how infrequently planes crash and 5 minutes later we see reno story. i know wwII fighter planes and passenger jets are apples and oranges but it was still eerie.

There aren't your WWII P-51's... these planes have been completely stripped to the frame and all new parts.

Shit just happens, you've got learn to go on with it... next time hopefully it won't and maybe the maintenance crew will be a little more tedious and do their checks more often... but there's nothing that can be done to lessen the risks of these types of events.

Haha maybe ya'll can just agree to disagree. But yes, you could easily minimize the risk at these events by thoroughly inspecting every essential part on the plane to make sure everything is solid. It's one thing when I plane is just doing simple passenger duties... but the acrobatic maneuvers and extreme G forces at an airshow puts extreme stress on every single part of the plane, making failure more likely. So there is really no excuse for anything but the most thorough top to bottom mechanical/safety checks.

Believe me LWL88, these planes spend days before the race getting checked...

At that time, I am more than sure the trim tab was secured, as it is a definite check during ALL preflights of most aircraft (trimming the aircraft is a constant duty of any pilot).


I am very interested to see what the NTSB comes up with.
