GM Selling ALL Your Onstar Information

They are sharing your information even if you turn it off or stop the service. There is more to this story than what is here. A GM spokesman said while being interviewed that there was nothing wrong with this and hung up on the radio interviewer.

Simply stopping the service will not stop this you must contact GM and tell them that you want the 2-way connection disconnected otherwise they will continue to collect and sell your information.

Believe it, it's real.

GM’s OnStar now spying on your car for profit even after you unsubscribe?

If you’re the owner of a fairly new General Motors product, you may want to take a close look at the most recent OnStar terms and conditions. As it turns out, the company has altered the parameters under which it can legally collect GPS data on your vehicle.
Originally, the terms and conditions stated that OnStar could only collect information on your vehicle’s location during a theft recovery or in the midst of sending emergency services your way. That has apparently changed. Now, OnStar says that it has the right to collect and sell personal, yet supposedly anonymous information on your vehicle, including speed, location, seat belt usage and other information.
Who would be interested in that data, you ask? Law enforcement agencies, for starters, as well as insurance companies. Perhaps the most startling news to come out of the latest OnStar terms and conditions is the fact that the company can continue to collect the information even after you disconnect the service. If you want the info to be cut off all together, you’ll have to specifically shut down the vehicle’s data connection. If that sounds scary, you should check out a full breakdown of the new policies here.

Yeah I saw that article a few days ago... fucked up. I feel like eventually this story is gonna blow up and Onstar/GM is gonna have a huge PR nightmare on their hands.

For the moment though... I'm REALLY glad I don't drive a GM car.

I'd never use onstar EVER. It was just asking to be abused. Hell I hate using my GPS for the same reason, but they're handy every now and then.

With every day, technology is advancing...

And with the advancement, the line between a corporations property and an end users transmittable data is being blurred.

Just like net neutrality...it's a big issue these days, that not many are aware about. ( Corporations like Comcast, or Cox can potentially 'own' the internet. Lots of stuff going on in court to decide whether or not it's actually LEGAL..) Potentially, they could own the internet, and slow down 'unfavorable' traffic to the point where it COULD be considered sensorship! The *FEAR* is that they could potentally be prioritizing traffic to a radical extreme, for only the people who shell out billions on their corporate network. IF we gave them the chance.

If corporations keep paying lawyers to keep pushing the loop holes.... soon enough the average citizen will be behind the big companies and governmnets in general knowledge :dunce:..

It's just happening so fast, most people can't keep up with new legal definitions on the web. The only people who actually do that, understand it, and work the system are being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. & The average citizen continues on normally, completely oblivious to all the radical shit going on around them.

here is part of what they say they will do with your information

The company says it can share information with roadside assistance and emergency providers, but also with law enforcement, credit card processors, data management companies and “third parties with whom we contract with to conduct joint marketing initiatives.”

I am now driving my last General Motors car. Who do they think they are?

You do realize that you don't have to subscribe to the 'ONSTAR' program.... and yet still be able to drive a Chevrolet/GM vehicle don't you?

lol..

you don't HAVE to have 'ONSTAR'.

which is what I would recommend.

I've heard about this thousands of times.. about them selling customers personal information. Which why I canceled my subscription to my ONSTAR in my Escalade. I'm not going to let them steal/sell my identity.. got me fucked up with someone else. Shhhiiittt.. better check my dental records. heh..

but yeah, I agree with you.. its fucked up that they do that. they should be prosecuted and the people that had their information stolen and sold.. should be compensated IMO.

peace.

did you "disconnect" the unit, or simply cancel your service?

both.

I first disconnected the unit.. then called to unsubscribe. They told me they could tell that I had unplugged/disconnected the unit... and told me that if I wanted to unsubscribe, I would have to plug/reconnect the unit back.. so they could "deactivate" the unit. So of course, that's exactly what I did.

thats tru too dirtyho.

like the screen name btw.. nice. hehe... dirty ho.

Luckily I never followed the "get an Iphone or your not cool" rantings...

I still have my old LG/Blackberry... I don't need one of those damn Iphones anyhow. They're overpriced and over rated IMO.
