First Soil Grow - Sour Diesel - Medical Grow

If We compare this week from two weeks ago I think we're doing very good... pretty fast growth...all things considered...

The pots are definately getting too small, I'm just going to wait a couple days till some of the smaller ones catch up to re-pot them... I was figureing with them staying in the smaller pots, the bigger plants will get stunted for a couple days to let the others catch up... then they should all be around the same size... so I can put them in 5 gallon buckets and top them...

The one thing I have heard from the buddy growing in FFOF, he does quite a bit of outdoor growing, and he says the more soil you use the better...

Yeah, it's a hit or miss for some people. Some love it, some hate it. Roots organic is supposedly good along with their nutrient regiment. Then again if you like to do it yourself, it might be better to make your own dirt a la 'super soil' style. You thought about using a recipe like that? Your plants have a ways to go, so any problems right now could be corrected by a nice repot of a good mix. I'll keep watching, I'm sure they'll get past the awkward stage and harvest nicely. The early stress is a motivator.

I could try it, but I like to take things one step at a time, so this grow will just get this stuff, and next grow we can try a couple different soils... as long as I have something to base it against... without a control group or a decent grow I wouldn't know if it was the soil, or my nutes... with a later grow and everything being the same with all aspects except the soil... It should be easy to tell if I should change that out...

one thing you should understand, is that most of the nitrogen that I use is nitrate nitrogen... which is far better than the ammonium nitrate or urea nitrate that most of the soil recipes call for... the potting soil I chose have very little or practically no nutrients... all I was looking for was a texture that I wanted for good drainage...

basically I'm feeding with way more usable nitrogen than many people ever give their plants...

Nitrate is a natural material in soils. Adequate supply of nitrate is necessary for good plant growth. Probably more than 90 percent of the nitrogen absorbed by plants is in the nitrate form

That's interesting, thanks for the link. I'm pretty new to soil and growing myself for anything new or informative is cool. I stick to the pre-mixed soils for reliability at this juncture, but I am also trying a super soil mixture for ease of use. I'm hoping it'll take the guess work out of the whole fertilization process. Hydro is easier in the fact that if you mess up you can always refill the rez. Anyway, good luck.

yea, I've done the hydro thing... but if anything is wrong with your meter or your pumps break down or half a dozen other things... you get screwed... and so far I've seen better results with almost no effort out of the soil grows...

because of the problems at the start of this grow, I feel I'm about 1-1.5 weeks behind schedule... so That's prob how long I'll go over the 4 week veg time... it won't be bad though, because I'll top the plants and let the stocks get bigger... usually the bigger the stocks, the bigger the nuggs...LOL
 
Do you have any good pics of your plants in soil... feel free to post... I like pics... always gives me new ideas...LOL
 
Back to the gnat issue; if they do start showing up put a layer of sand on the soil. Helps keep them from breeding in it :)

Things definitely look better than a few weeks ago hehe ;)
 
I haven't seen any gnats yet, but I will prob do that if it happens ... It's almost time for me to feed some azamax in to prevent any pests though... a good systemic pesticide works miracles, when you find out you've got pests it's usally very late.. but adding it in as a normal thing should prevent anything from getting out of control... and it's easily flushed from the soil after a week or so...

I heard Perlite over the top is also good to put over the top of the soil to kill the gnats... have you heard anything about that?
 
Ok, still haven't gone over to my buddy's... he's apparently too busy... I'm still worried about the color since the picture he sends me is hard to tell the color... but he swears it is medium to dark green...

I'm going to have him chop the big ones back aways and cleanup the bottoms of all of them... prob going to try topping the very tops of the little ones too, need them all to get bushyier before flowering...

I don't like his camera at all... he tried to take the picture with the lights off... just opening the shed to daylight... but I think it just made it funnyier looking...

I have heard that actually. I'm assuming its the same reason as the sand, prevents them from really getting into the soil. I would LOVE to know how they keep it from floating around haha :)
 
Hey, they look really nice actually. How are they doing in the past three days? I'm curious to see their growth this week, I bet some of the smaller ones are catching up by now. I think some of those big plants look ready to flower maybe?

My plants are around 20-22 days old from seed, and they're much bushier, but that's because I have them under a 1000W MH 24/7. I'm having second thoughts about the light cycle, but I don't want to mess with it until flowering. They're actually really, really short - it's kinda unusual from my experience. I know a lot of growers love the idea of short, bushy plants but I can't help but keep moving the light up to make them stretch a little so the nodes have more room to branch out. I haven't measured them officially but they're not even a foot yet. I'm kinda worried about flowering them too short, but I read it's more about node sites than actual height that matters. Anyway, I'll post pics here soon.
 
ok, week 5, I'm going over in the morning to check everything out... He's supposed to build the cabinet for the mothers and clones... and then I'll seperate everything, and he can put them in the 5gallon buckets...

here's the latest picture he sent me... those POS iphone 4's cameras suck... he sent this pic a couple days ago...

ps. I'll take pics myself in the morning so that I can post better pics... he assures me that they are perfectly green "like a perfect lawn green" is what he says... lucky for me he has a good lawn.. otherwise I'd worry...LOL

generally a short bushy plant works well, but sometimes letting it stretch is a good idea too because light penetrates through the whole canopy... getting bud everywhere...

I wouldn't worry about the node spaceing... if you feed it some veg nutes in the first week of flower (more nitrogen) they will continue to grow and stretch out... just make sure they have plenty of nodes to start with... try to flower them when they at least reach 14-18 inches... and you should do fine...

go ahead and Post up pics whenever you get time...
 
Ok, finally got over to check everything out... tiny bit of nute burn on the smaller plants because he wasn't flushing with enough water, but not bad or anything, everything looks really good... the nute burn he told me about, and he flushed better before I even had to tell him... so that was all good...

mother cabinet was mostly finished, and Wednesday he will repot the plants into 5 gallon buckets... 2inch layer of perlite on bottom for drainage and same mix of potting soil and wood chips... then top or bend the taller plants to match the others... one week longer then flower...

I took 2 of the smallest looking ones to give to a buddy... there will only be 12 plants under the 1000w when it comes down to flowering time...

The roots look healthy and white... they were comeing out of the bottoms of the big pots... prob like 5 inches or so...LOL

he's supposed to trim the bottom 6 inches of the plants and move them all over to buckets wednesday... the 4 or 5 center plants will be moved into the clone/mother area as they are all differnt strains..

since he was able to make a clone of my personal strain for a mother, he may get to flower one of those if it is big enough by the time the others are ready... that strain I named "punch drunk"... it is a pure indica.... La confidential X Skywalker cross... last time I did it, it smelled like blueberry fruit punch mixed with ferminted wine... and tasted just like it.... it also hit like a true Indica... a one hitter quiter... but grows just like a sativa with thin leaves and huge colas... once he gets it mothered out it will prob be the only strain he runs in his next cycle...
 
The leaves are huge on this diesel... some are almost 10"-12" Everything looking good... prob hit them with a 20-20-20 mix for a couple days before flowering...
 
Week 6 tomorrow, pretty much finished veg, going to check everything out tomorrow and take better pics too...
Everything looks good, clone/mother area finished, and looking good... going to double check that all the plants are trimmed out on the bottom, and bend/top whatever needs it.. then I think I'll hit it with a simple 20-20-20 mix for a week then switch to flowering nutes...

The Color looks pretty acurate in the clone area ... light's arn't messing with the pic in that one... nice shade of green...
