For sure, I know more than one person who has made a go of it with fish only to fail and then have a bunch of stuff they can't use taking up space. I suspect they would have paid someone to take it off their hands...I'd look at second hand or auction sites, you can pick up incredible deals.
It realy helps to get the tank up and stable a few days before adding fish.
This allows time for bacteria to grow on surfaces. The in turn will turn toxic wastes from fish into nutrients for plants.
Yeah, but if I get a mandarin, it'll deplete the copepods in the tank faster than then they can reproduce. 3 gallons is too small for a mandarin, unlesws they eat frozen food...Might try a red scooter blenny(starry gragonet), because I hear they take to frozen food much easier...Excited about possibly getting my first piece of coral today!Copepods are great, that's a good sign! You could even get a mandarin Dragonette which mostly exclusively eat pods.
Great fish!
Make sure wait till you can see their eyes before hatching - chances are it will be a week or two after their labeled hatch date. You will also need more brine shrimp eggs after the first or second hatching and make sure to read up on infusoria (basically rotten spinach) as several of the species are to tiny to eat baby brine shrimp. I bought a tiny can of brine shrimp eggs which is more than I'll ever use in a life time - let me know if you want me to mail a dime bag or two of them your way - as you can see not to hard to mail em in a standard envelope.Just recieved my package of Killifish eggs from Thailand, and this is AFTER they contacted me and said they would be late because of flooding...Very solid company, they were quick to keep me updated on the status of my package, and here it is!!

Came with a nice little letter in English, describing the hatching methods of both the Killifish eggs and the brine shrimp eggs...Came with the sealed foil fack that feels like it contains a little tiny tupperware container inside, that contains the fish eggs along with some peat moss...Also came with a little tiny spoon, an eye dropper, and 20,000(i'm sure they counted them ) brine shrimp eggs...I forget what I paid exactly, but I don't think it was more than 20 bucks including shipping...not too shabby! My hatch date is December 25th, too...lol...Do not open till Christmas! haha
Yeah, it's a pretty thorough letter, and I'll read up on infusoria...I'm in no rush, I've soprta become consumed by the saltwater dark side...lol...I'm planning on ordering a second saltwater pico shortly, since I have enough supplies for a while, and I have like 4lbs of live sand that I don't wanna go to waste If you're still intrerested, I found a site that'll ship the same one I have for under 50 bucks, and if you throw in something else for 8 bucks, shipping is free(for orders over 49 bucks...the JBJ picotope is listed at 41.99)Make sure wait till you can see their eyes before hatching - chances are it will be a week or two after their labeled hatch date. Oh shit 3 gallons ya too small. Nice candycane, any thoughts on a goby/pistol shrimp combo?Yeah, but if I get a mandarin, it'll deplete the copepods in the tank faster than then they can reproduce. 3 gallons is too small for a mandarin, unlesws they eat frozen food...Might try a red scooter blenny(starry gragonet), because I hear they take to frozen food much easier...Excited about possibly getting my first piece of coral today!
To be honest, I don't want to add any fish until I set up my overflow and sump...Once I increase the water volume (planning on a 5-10 gallon sump), then things will probably be stable enough to support a larger bioload...I also purchased a second Pico, the same one, and will be setting that one up sometime shortly after Christmas! I think they should each have their own sump, or I at least need to cycle the second tank before connecting it to the system...Oh shit 3 gallons ya too small. Yeah. I've been lecturing people how they cant use my magnetic scrubber on this tank - soft sponges only! I'll post some pics but they are going to be pretty boring for quite some time. I'm dry planting the dwarf baby tears so for the time being it just looks like a bunch of mud in a tiny clear box.@ Gastanker, Acrylic aquariums give your aquatic life beautiful look but scratch so easy. Enjoy & remember to post pics!
