I want to start an Aquarium...

I'd look at second hand or auction sites, you can pick up incredible deals.

It realy helps to get the tank up and stable a few days before adding fish.
This allows time for bacteria to grow on surfaces. The in turn will turn toxic wastes from fish into nutrients for plants.
For sure, I know more than one person who has made a go of it with fish only to fail and then have a bunch of stuff they can't use taking up space. I suspect they would have paid someone to take it off their hands...

I've got copepods in my saltwater aquarium...I've been led to believe this is a good thing, and a sign of a healthy marine environment, so I'mn stoked! Plus I hear they make good fish food!

Just noticed this, I recently setup my 55 gallon tank a couple months back and caught a large mouth bass about 6" long and kept him as a pet lol. Hes pretty awesome, a lot of you probably arnt into preditory fish but this guys is ridiculious lol. I've had him a couple month and I'm already hand feeding him large goldfish. Plan is to feed him well over the winter and let him go sometime next year. The last thing I want to do is have him outgrow the tank! I would need like a 300 gal to keep him happy lol. Anyway sweet tanks, I'm going to go back through and check them out!

@ Smelly, first thing that comes to my mind is temperature shock. I would keep the water at the same temp the water is where you got the bass from. Good luck!

Lookin good. I have been growing coral for years now. Had a few tanks, most recently was a 300g frag tank to grow out my pricier pieces.

Mantis shrimp are awesome too, just make sure you have a dedicated tank for them. They have the fastest attack in the animal kingdom. If you need tips or pointers let me know. It's a great hobby, but takes a lot of time and patients.

I have grown out some nice SPS Frags to basketball sizes.

Good luck!

Copepods are great, that's a good sign! You could even get a mandarin Dragonette which mostly exclusively eat pods.

Great fish!

Yeah, but if I get a mandarin, it'll deplete the copepods in the tank faster than then they can reproduce. 3 gallons is too small for a mandarin, unlesws they eat frozen food...Might try a red scooter blenny(starry gragonet), because I hear they take to frozen food much easier...Excited about possibly getting my first piece of coral today!

Just recieved my package of Killifish eggs from Thailand, and this is AFTER they contacted me and said they would be late because of flooding...Very solid company, they were quick to keep me updated on the status of my package, and here it is!!
100_1360.jpg100_1361.jpg100_1362.jpg

Came with a nice little letter in English, describing the hatching methods of both the Killifish eggs and the brine shrimp eggs...Came with the sealed foil fack that feels like it contains a little tiny tupperware container inside, that contains the fish eggs along with some peat moss...Also came with a little tiny spoon, an eye dropper, and 20,000(i'm sure they counted them ;) ) brine shrimp eggs...I forget what I paid exactly, but I don't think it was more than 20 bucks including shipping...not too shabby! My hatch date is December 25th, too...lol...Do not open till Christmas! haha

Make sure wait till you can see their eyes before hatching - chances are it will be a week or two after their labeled hatch date. You will also need more brine shrimp eggs after the first or second hatching and make sure to read up on infusoria (basically rotten spinach) as several of the species are to tiny to eat baby brine shrimp. I bought a tiny can of brine shrimp eggs which is more than I'll ever use in a life time - let me know if you want me to mail a dime bag or two of them your way - as you can see not to hard to mail em in a standard envelope.

And some pictures of my first coral ever! Candy Cane trumpet coral! First pic is under the blue LED night light, and second pic is with flash...No pics of their "normal" daylight lighting, but the colors are crazy! Wish I could get my camera to pick it up better, but under the night lights the centers glow like some crazy blacklight poster!

I'm hoping to find the same 3g nana under the tree this year. Fingers crossed (ahem you know who, if you are snooping, I again want a 3g picotype for xmas :) )

Looks awesome. I feel like a salt water tank would just make me want to shroom all the time. No idea why it has that effect on me but it sure does in a powerful way.

Yeah, it's a pretty thorough letter, and I'll read up on infusoria...I'm in no rush, I've soprta become consumed by the saltwater dark side...lol...I'm planning on ordering a second saltwater pico shortly, since I have enough supplies for a while, and I have like 4lbs of live sand that I don't wanna go to waste ;) If you're still intrerested, I found a site that'll ship the same one I have for under 50 bucks, and if you throw in something else for 8 bucks, shipping is free(for orders over 49 bucks...the JBJ picotope is listed at 41.99)

Oh shit 3 gallons ya too small. Nice candycane, any thoughts on a goby/pistol shrimp combo?

To be honest, I don't want to add any fish until I set up my overflow and sump...Once I increase the water volume (planning on a 5-10 gallon sump), then things will probably be stable enough to support a larger bioload...I also purchased a second Pico, the same one, and will be setting that one up sometime shortly after Christmas! I think they should each have their own sump, or I at least need to cycle the second tank before connecting it to the system...

Greedy trumpet just got fed, asking for more!!

Got my own 3gal pico today :) Not the JBJ Picotype like I expected but something very similar. She said she had ordered the JBJ but the tank that came is acrylic :( Same size and shape as the JBJ and everything but acrylic. Fortunately the filter is actually nicer than the JBJs and the light is 18w 50/50 10k:actinic which I guess is twice the power of the JBJ.

I'm going planted freshwater with shrimp so I'm thinking the 18w is overkill and might order a JBJ and swap the lights and filters. 18w should be great for a saltwater tank and 9w sounds much more appropriate for freshwater - same goes with the flow rate of the filters.

Already started to plant Glosso and dwarf baby tears :) pics to come later.

@ Gastanker, Acrylic aquariums give your aquatic life beautiful look but scratch so easy. Enjoy & remember to post pics! ;)

Yeah. I've been lecturing people how they cant use my magnetic scrubber on this tank - soft sponges only! I'll post some pics but they are going to be pretty boring for quite some time. I'm dry planting the dwarf baby tears so for the time being it just looks like a bunch of mud in a tiny clear box.

Gastanker! Congrats, man! Sounds like she got you the TOM Deco Acrylic...it comes with an 18W 50/50...I have a spare Picotope lamp, the 9w one, so if you wanna "borrow" it, I'm game...I was just gonna use it for a refugium light, because I ordered a 36" 4 bulb t5 for my 2 Picotopes(156 watts!)...Overkill? I think so! I wouldn't swap the filter though, I think iyours is an 80gph, which should keep that little 3 gallon's water sparkling clear! I'm using an AC50 on my new pico till it finishes cycling, and it filters 200gph...lol
