Whats going on Dirty. Was talking to angry about Kellogs Premium Soil. He told me you have some experience using it.

I am on a budget right now....long story why....but I am not happy with the soil I am using now. Its burning my plants. To heavy on nutes and the PH is off. So I was asking about a soil that would be good for seedlings. Someone previously mentioned Kellogs. So I wanted to find out from someone if they used it with seedlings ever and if they would recommend it. I heard its a good alternative to FoxFarm.

I am guessing its great for vegging plants but how does seedlings do in it? Any info you could give would be much appreciated

ot It works for me I use it with seedlings. I sprout seeds in it I fill a cup put the seed in add some warm water and then saran wrap on top then the window sill.

The seedling are two and three weeks respectively. In a week I will give them a bigger pot. Then i will take clones.They both look like females right now. I have more seeds popping seed shells as I type. Going to mix up me some of the Kellog's today so I definitely wont be short come May. keepem green dirrtyd

Actually I use the kelloggs patio plus. I may be switching to a brand that a local nursery carries down the street it has all the same ingredients in it. Plus they sell the EWC from EB stone real cheap. They also have the other amendments at a price two dollars cheaper a 5lb box than a hydro shop. keepem green dirrtyd

Going to transplant another sprout into a square pot tomorrow. I'm starting to see the roots through the clear cup. Then I will take a new sprout and transplant into the clear cup. The first two will go into bigger pots soon. Keepem green dirrtyd

Yes Home Depot has it for about 5 dollars for 1.5 cubic ft. The transplanting will be easy as long as I dont forget to sprinkle the roots. keepem green dirrtyd

Well I went and purchased some RTI products today at Orchards since there was no tax on them today. I got the Azos and the Mykos the third product was a foliar product which I dont presently do to achieve my results. Well the worm bins are doing good about to add another layer here soon.The wormcastings look totally different than what you would buy at a store in a bag. This weather is weird looks like it will be a funny rainy season this year.

Hey dirrtyd...any chance you can expand on your worm farm? Do you have a plastic bin or wooden? How many layers? How long does it take to "make" 10 lbs. of worm castings??? There are several DIY links on line, but any hints about what works best would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My worm farm consists of two plastic bins approxiamately 25 gallons each. Also a worm bin 360 with three active trays at the moment. I think I have about 8 quarts in the 360 but I have yet to harvest any going to wait until the spring and top dress the whole garden with them. I feed them vegetable peels, bread and eggshells sometimes I throw in cornmeal. I added another few hundred worms to each of the plastic bins today. The worms I use in the farm are red wigglers. Also the bins do not smell at all. It took about three months before I saw castings worth using. You will also need alot of worms if you want them gobbling like crazy. I think I got a couple thousand in each bin now maybe more. We will see how fast they process the food I put in today. keepem green dirrtyd

Nice. I'm planning on starting with patio plus this year too. Last year I was using a mix of ocean forest and happy frog as a base so I should be saving over 60% on the soil this year.

J I recommend that you put your amendments in and let it cook for a while. When I did not do this I noticed gnats also if you can source the crab meal and neem meal use it in your amendments haven't seen gnats since. keepem green dirrtyd

I transplanted the biggest plant she looks female to me. The roots were whtie and pretty coming out of the square pot I trimmed a little and put in a bigger pot and gave here a EWC slurry. Today she was standing up like a champion no droopy leaves. This is going to be a keeper for all who see her the fan leaves are huge under cfl's. The other plant will be transplanted soon she is out growing the square pot already at her third set of true leaves. They will be monstrous outdoors for sure can't wait to smell her in April then August again.keepem green dirrtyd

I dont see a problem as long as you have a well established root system. Also you can just add molasses and water and cook a plain bag to use for younger plants. keepem green dirrtyd

Well the rain has come and my raincatcher is working like a charm. Now I'm filling used water bottles with rainwater and using them to water all the seedlings. I will do this to store the rainwater and also water the babies. I want to try and have a surplus of rainwater once the rainy season is over. Could be a dry spring this year I hope not. Well the onions and garlic are shooting out the ground already. Keepem green dirrtyyd

Since you mentioned it I've got garlic issues I planted a bunch of bulbs and after a long ass time pulled them and they just looked like green onions. What gives? How do you know when there done?

I wont harvest until the fall I wait until the blades start to fall over then dig up one and let it dry out. Should be a nice sized clove when dry hope that helps. Looks like I got two females so far still hoping for a male. keepem green dirrtyd

Well the worms went crazy for the bread so almost none in the upper bin. Will be ready to harvest some castings here soon. Will replace the bin with a new one and bedding. Then watch them migrate funny seems like the worms like going down rather than up for food. keepem green dirrtyd

Thanks for the fine tuning! Have wanted a worm bin since I saw one at a hard core gardener friend's years ago. We had a huge dinner gig, and she threw all the compost (not meat or fat) into her worm bin. It was GONE by morning. No turning compost piles. No slimy mess if you get the mix wrong.

Are the bins on legs or counter? Any chance of pics? Not sure what a worm bin 360 is. When I googled "worm bins" the first 3 or 4 hits were in my area and on the county extension site there's 3 sources of red wigglers. Thanks for the quantities...I wouldn't have ordered nearly enough.

Eggshells and vegetables are great, but my horse is really going to be irked if he doesn't get the leftover bread... Clearly this is a project I should have done long ago. Thanks again!
