if your using the dry wall mud that is in a bucket already mixed an old timer that had done dry wall his while life told me to put a little shot of dawn dish soap in the mud and mix it up real good. It helps the mud spread a lot easier.
I also learned doing my own DIY drywall is that putting on less and doing multiple coats is better than trying to do it all in one application and putting to much on. If you get to much on and it dries there is a lot of sanding to be done.

the paint is peeling off the dry wall? or the trim? there is a reason why the paint would peel if u dont fix that problem the new paint will peel up also

it's not peeling on it's own, it's just a super fucked up paint job that's gotten worse each coat of paint by whoever has lived here before.
i'm peeling it down to the drywall, mudding it up, getting all the imperfections and creating a new smooth surface so I can paint the room and not have it look like shit.


whoever painted this place before painted over screws and shit that they were too lazy to remove...

Always prime first. My bro was a drywaller when he comes over I'll ask some how to's.

any tips on painting over the drywall? i've never had to paint over a wall that hasn't already been primed.

Everything's pretty much good to go.

Years of fucked up painting from past occupants has been stripped down to the drywall.
Getting some guardz surface sealer for any areas of damaged drywall (patches of brown paper)
Mudding the walls and fixing the dings, and then sanding (or sponging like neo suggested)

The point of the thread was just tips and tricks to really give the walls a clean flush surface before priming and adding the new paint.

priming is essential in damp atmospheres and non porous materials as its a good preventative for mold

but not all dry walling requires priming its dictated by the atmosphere and intended use

I have found that if the drywall is really bad like you say it is a lot easier and hides all the imperfections to do a knock down or lace texture on the walls.
A lot of rental places rent the spray hoppers to spray the walls with a type of plaster and then come back and use a trowel to knock it down.

Yeah I already planned on priming anyway but have only primed over already painted surfaces when the walls were a dark color and I was painting them white.

I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a specific primer that I should use for going over the drywall.

okay tips for flush surfaces is use the right putty fans

as well dont leave holes empy pocketed meaning dont jsut put a net on the hole then putty over it

use a foam or if you dont have it newspaper actually works well in a bind

the flush is also paint dependent i suggest a flat white rollover then use a high gloss white ontop

no their isnt really a specific primer for dry wall

if you were dealing with a rusty door then yah you have to use a specific primer

I should have been more clear. Primer any joints that you screwed with. That way you will get an even appearance when you paint. Otherwise it you can see the joints.

i got yah now you can get around using primer in bindings if your skilled drywalller your joints should level flat with out having to sand down mcuh

ive done it for years now so its a extension of the hand

Nahh I've been priming joints with my spit for years, and I always get that nice flush burning.

if you havent picked up the primer yet i suggest checking out kilz really great stuff started using it and never turned back

lol im a jack of all trades so to say i can strip and wax floors , lay floors , do electrical work, do walls, drop ceilings , do it all

You've dropped ceilings? I can't say I blame you, those things must be pretty heavy.

I'm not a pro, I have to prime. To be honest, whenever I do a drywall job at home I call my brother to fix my fixes. He is just like you can almost do it in his sleep.
