if your using the dry wall mud that is in a bucket already mixed an old timer that had done dry wall his while life told me to put a little shot of dawn dish soap in the mud and mix it up real good. It helps the mud spread a lot easier.
I also learned doing my own DIY drywall is that putting on less and doing multiple coats is better than trying to do it all in one application and putting to much on. If you get to much on and it dries there is a lot of sanding to be done.
