It looks like more than a few people here are not only heads, but enjoy the life aquatic as well. That's what this thread is about (I don't give a shit if you hijack it, either, I'm not really very anal that way, I'm anal in other ways).

I started my very first tank when my first son was a newborn, I wanted him to have something to watch because he had upper respiratory troubles and I had to keep him in an upright position so he could breath and sleep. A couple of goldfish and koi in a 10gal tank. From there things rapidly expanded, next thing I know I've got tanks all over the apartment. Within two years it went from goldfish to saltwater to keeping miniature reef. At that point I had to pay for my habit, so I got a job at the best aquarium shop around.

Turned out the owner was an old-timer who helped set up a few of the distributors in L.A. (a huge number of our aquarium fishes go through L.A., also known in the trade as 104th). That led to working for some wholesalers, as well as starting my own set-up and maintenance business. Once I was there, my own tanks went to shit. It was true, once you start working the trade you don't want a tank at home to have to worry about. Still though, I geeked on the fishes.

Mine started breeding on me despite my neglect (at first I thought they were bugs), Lake Tanganyikan dwarf African cichlids. Got out of the trade, couldn't get the aquarium water out of my blood: I ended up volunteering at the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific and worked with the staff veterinarian (that was "ok", but he was dry and droll and had no appreciation for my little jokes). Then I was placed in the coral lab where they raise up the bamboo sharks they breed and release. GOD I loved that. I loved the 8' tall foam fractionators (a.k.a. protein skimmers). I loved the ozonizers. I would wait for the schoolchildren to arrive before I fed the baby bamboos, I loved talking with them about the sharks. I loved feeding the fish in the big tank at the entrance while people stood out front all big-eyed (the Pacific display). I bonded with the wolf eels that had to be hand-fed (they have faces, I swear to God, Google "wolf eel" and tell me that fish doesn't have a face!). I adored working the quarantine shift, where the baby Napoleon wrasse and Picasso trigger would stalk me while I fed, showing me their teeth.

Yeah, I geek out on fish pretty hard, but do you think we have an aquarium at home? No way! I met my husband on an aquarium site and there's just too much hardheadedness in this house, we can't even agree on what and how to keep a freshwater tank, so..!

What do you keep? How long have you been an aquarist? How hard do you geek out on the pretty fishes?

I sprinkle food directly on his head and he waves hi big fiddler claw at me.. I pretend like he is saying "hi i love you" but I really suspect he is threateningme.. :(

I have 2 tiger barbs.. they are FAT... giant plecatomus...4 neons.... 2 loachs (the loaches are different... one is the common stripped loach... orange and black.. the otherloach is more like an eel and striped black and yellow)

I also have a 10 inch eel... well maybe only 5 inches :(.... i nly see him about once every 3 weeks...

Hello Wee Gnome o' Th' Garden,

I am woman, hear me rawr.

The fiddler crab is not threatening you, he is waving for a woman crab, there is love in his wave. They're funny to watch if you get a whole group of them because they try to out-wave each other. I wonder, do their little crab arms get tired? I used to wonder if fish ever got dizzy, but then I determined that they don't get dizzy, but they can get up and down messed up. Don't do what I did.

Hey you guys, this thread is useless without pix. 8)

Pictured below is the only live coral display at the LBAOP. Continue towards the left and right around that corner is the coral lab, where the baby bamboo sharks and other specimens are displayed.

If I had had just a few more dives under my belt I would have been qualified to dive the larger display tanks.

i had a 250 gal set up with 2 red ear sliders, a large mouth bass, a couple rock bass, a bluegill, some shiners, over100 newborn blue catfish, i had a 15 inch gar but the turtles and catfish ate him, i had a 5lb snappin turtle in there for about a month, and on and off a whole bunch of things. it was so cool cause it actually worked. the water stayed a little tented but dead on looking like a lake, i had it all set up with lilly pads and everything, i had all kinds of pictures but they got lost when we switched camaras.

This is a cool thread. maybe you can help me?
right now i have a 250 ltr and a 100 ltr tank,
both saltwater. In the 100ltr i have just seahorses and some reef, very nice set up.
the 250 ltr is just fish at this time.
i have 2 lion fish 1 is a fuzzy lion and the other is quite big lion, clown fish, Picasso trigger, some blue and red austrialian fish, nice looking. and a small yellow fish that just chills out on the rocks,
just 6 fish at the moment iam gona build it to about 10 or 12, i wanna add a few more lion fish maybe 2 more.
iam having a problem with my large lion fish he doesent want to eat? ive had him for about 6 or 7 months, everytime i lift the lid to feed, all other fish race to top for there share but lion just chills out and does nothing? been like this for the past week or so.
my ph is spot on and water is 100% spot on, tested every other day. the only food the lion is now eating is when i drop a small fresh water fish in. I dont wana keep doing this because i know it cant be good for him to just be eating them?
Any ideas please?

No, I've never kept my own or any for customers, my only experience with them is in a retail shop setting. They were always selling fast so we never kept any long enough. You might want to search here: Wetwebmedia, Aquarium, Pond, Marine and Freshwater Fish, reef tanks, and Aquatics Information
I used to work with the fellow who 'owns' this site back in the early 90s, and then more recently after my work injury on the site itself for quite a few years (not anymore, and I don't know who half the 'crew' is anymore). He's a trip because he has an amazing amount of information stored up in his head. The site is, literally, tens of thousands of pages, and for many animals is a Googlewhack (the only hit you'll get when you Google). He's got a lot of photog credits as well, and is an author. Anyway, use the Google search bar on the home page, be sure to check the radio button that tells it to search JUST WetWebMedia. Then, when you get your hits, use the "cached" link so that your search terms are highlighted.

Thank you, once I started reading of all these others with aquarium I thought it might be nice to hear what others are doing. I might be able to, but first I have to convert all your metrics. D'oh!
right now i have a 250 ltr and a 100 ltr tank,
both saltwater. In the 100ltr i have just seahorses and some reef, very nice set up.
Hopefully the reef with the syngnathids is a low water flow environment. Seahorses are not found out on the reef in nature, but instead are usually found in lagoons and large beds of seagrass. It also matters what species of seahorses you have. Give us pictures! :D
the 250 ltr is just fish at this time.
i have 2 lion fish 1 is a fuzzy lion and the other is quite big lion, clown fish, Picasso trigger, some blue and red austrialian fish, nice looking. and a small yellow fish that just chills out on the rocks,
Ok, I've just done the conversion and DAMN! You have that tank stuffed to the gills (pardon the pun) with fish. WAAAYYY too many fish, my friend. They may be small now, but they'll grow into little slabs of meat (the triggerfish, once grown, is good eating, and they can get to the size of a big frying pan).

That 250ltr = 66gals U.S. and in the grand scheme of the marine environment that's like pissing in the ocean. We have a saying: Dilution is the solution to pollution, and that means that as long as there's sufficient water volume (that 250ltr is appropriate for ONE lionfish by itself, they can get BIG) and water quality is high then nature works just fine. But, allow nutrients and waste products to build up and a cascade of ill effects starts. Do you have any live rock in that tank?
just 6 fish at the moment iam gona build it to about 10 or 12, i wanna add a few more lion fish maybe 2 more.
With the fish you already have, please don't. You will experience disease and a crash.
iam having a problem with my large lion fish he doesent want to eat? ive had him for about 6 or 7 months, everytime i lift the lid to feed, all other fish race to top for there share but lion just chills out and does nothing? been like this for the past week or so.
They are known for going on feeding strikes. Also, they're ambush predators, some learn to come for food and some don't. Teaching them to feed from a feeding stick is best, then you can ensure they're being fed and that they're getting what they need.
my ph is spot on and water is 100% spot on, tested every other day.
I'm sorry, but that tells me nothing. I would need actual parameters. What's the pH? Has it shifted? What are your nitrate readings (the tanks sounds as though it's well established)? What's your filtration? Water change schedule? Specific gravity? What test kit are you using? (This can be more important than you think, not all kits are created equal.)
the only food the lion is now eating is when i drop a small fresh water fish in. I dont wana keep doing this because i know it cant be good for him to just be eating them?
You're absolutely right about that. The lipids (fats) developed in freshies are different from salties. There are those who have trouble getting their lions to feed who'll raise wild or black mollies (not the fancy types), then acclimate them to full salt and feed those. However, a single food source usually isn't very good.

Use that link I gave the Knowm above and search on your stuff. Quite a lot has been written on it, and much of it was written by me.
Any ideas please?
Yes. In all honesty, you need to seriously thin the herd. Picasso triggers (almost ALL triggers) are known to be aggressive to just about anything else in their tank. They're known to nip the spines off lionfishes, and they're known to bite US. I've been DOINKED. It hurts. I can't speak to the other fish that have only a color description.

Oh yeah, don't feed the lions every day, let them go at least every other day. Try to get some squid or similar, make sure it's been frozen really well because when you feed a saltwater fish other saltwater animals you run a real risk of introducing disease or parasites (which is why some folks like to feed freshwater animals to saltwater fish). Then, thaw it out. Make a feeding stick, I like to use something like a piece of bamboo or anything that's non-reactive in saltwater, then ziptie a plastic fork to it. You can then wiggle it to entice the fish. Just don't be surprised if he goes on a serious hunger strike, I've heard of them not eating for months, literally. Just keep trying with the feeding stick and keep up with water changes.

Make that tank 250gals US and THEN it would be properly sized for all those fish and a few more.

What a bummer!

Most folks don't like to do native setups like that (also known as a biotope, where you're recreating a little piece of nature as exactly as you can), but personally I think that's one of the best ways to go (and that's the debate my husband and I have been having and it's why we have no tanks  ).
How the HELL did you feed that snapping turtle, though? I've worked with something from South America called a mata mata, FUGLY and I'd say about as bad for biting as those snappers.

What kind of gar was it? Alligator gar? Gars are awesomely cool, but HIGHLY illegal in California. As a matter of fact, Fish & Game just dropped the hammer on a NorCal retailer for importing and selling some Asian arowanas that are on the CITES list (I don't know why, they're revered and bred in huge numbers all across the Asian continent, but there ya go, another law based on ignorance). He's got a fine of $10,000 AND jail time coming up.

I really wish to hell you still had pictures of that setup, MAN that had to be sweet, better than the crappie and bass tanks at Cabela's!

Ever get stuck by one of those catfishes? Fucking hurts, worse than being bitten by a moray, almost worse than being bitten by a trigger or puffer fish (they don't have teeth, they have a fused jaw so it's like you got bitten by a dull melon-baller). And their spines get infected so damned easily, YEEOWCH! :x

the reef with the syngnathids is a low water flow environment i have a small water jet blowing on the reef but it doesnt make to much of a wave. It has live rock and some reef in there along with a few hermit crabs, did have 7 but only got 2 left now. there is not loads reef in there just enough to make it look nice.

I do have live rock in my 250ltr tank and i will just keep it to the 6 fish i have now.
ive hade a few trigger fish and ive gave them away because they were nasty to other fish i hade a niger trigger that was so nasty, the trigger i got now was from the fish shop owners tank, he said its not like other triggers its nice, and i must say its never even tryed to look at another fish in the wrong way.
thank you for your info with the stick ill defo give that a shot, ill give you an update how it goes.
thank you once again.
ill post a few pix soon as my camara is charged up,
have you ever been stung by a lion fish?
