make sure you have a good fan and good ventilation especially if its in a small area, also that you can put the ballast outside the room....HIDs get hot, hot, hot

why is this guy tellin me to use cfl's shit what one would be best???? haha
why ask a question with 2 possible answers if you have already decided one answer is not what you want to hear? As for why because I use a 250 watt cfl for 5 plants and get better veg than I did with halide hot expensive to run crap HAHAHA. If you have never done something you dont have a valid opinion on it!!

well a 250 watt cool white cfl probably would work pretty well, but if you go with mh you will be able to grow your plants bigger....You may want to look into getting an hps instead of mh though cause they are just so much better for flowering. You can get an mh conversion bulb to use with an hps ballast and fixture. U can find really good prices on Ebay....

It's very simple...

more watts more lumens > less watts less lumens

What's best is the most you can afford watt/lumen wise for your situation..

I had eight plants under about 400 watts of flourescent...I switched to a 1000w hps w/ conversion bulb and they doubled in size in 5 days, they had been growing for 2.5 weeks under the flourescents

i have used both and the cfl is every bit as effective when used properly in a hydro set up without all the heat issues etc.BUT i would reccommend swapping to HPS for flowering. I am only recomending cfl for veg.

that seems reasonable woomeister, from my personal experience I'd probly go with the hps w/ mh conversion cause if I had started with that I woulda only needed that and wouldn't have to by cfls or change my lighting setup when I switched to flowering...just change the bulb....

mh and if u can afford a sodium bulb aswell u can swap bulbs after second week flower if in small space this method helps reduce strech imo, if no hight restriction swap bulds at start of flower and will finish a bit quicker if you use both bulbs, imo.
better still get a grolux or colour master bulb etc theirs a few to choose from.

and heres a tip they normall come with a stndard lamp sont or mh, if you go to hydro shop take cash, tell the guy/gal which hid unit you want, let them see you have cash hold in a way they can see it and then say, you are happy with the price but not with the bulb that comes in package as you put cash bak in your pocket then see what deal they will do, has worked every time 4 me haggle abit they want your cash and you want the best bulb for your hid
