only the salvia divinorum will do anything for you, none of the other varieties have any psycho-active ingredients..

same for poppies.. i'm trying to think of the variety of poppies that you want, but i'm more then sure they aren't the ones for sale at the local super market..
you can however buy packs of the correct poppy seeds online for not very much coin..

this is the one you want.. P. somniferum where p is for poppy.. :)

all kinds of nice flowers.. anything from say tulips, to hyancanths (sp?) .. i absolutely love the smell of hyacines...

different flowers bloom at different times of the year, so you'd need to figure out when you want them to bloom and pick the one's that fit what you're looking for..

You can find the right poppies. Look for "somniferum" in the formal name on the package. I got some Danish Flag last year at the garden store. The poppy seeds in the grocery store spice-rack are good, usually Tasmanian.

the p is actually for "papaver"(which means "poppy" in latin anyways so its whatevs) (hi rb *waves*)
the full latin name should be somewhere on the seed packet. although we have some purple spike salvia in one of the planters and i swear the cats get high off it. :)
and if you want seeds for those poppies you might want to hit up your local "little india" if you have one. i see them sold bulk, dirt-cheap, by the pound, although i'm reasonably certain that's a "coasting under the radar" thingy.

any of the fragrant herbals are beginner friendly.... lemon verbena has particularly pretty smelling flowers. bee balm/bergamot is another good one, really bright flowers, attracts butterflies, come in all sorts of colours between red and blue.
if you're looking for something a bit more visual, have you considered lilies? the "oriental" "orienpet hybrid" varieties smell beautiful and come in a wide range of colours. they're also quite "set-it-and-forget-it" -- as long as you keep them watered they'll bloom for anybody.

Yes those are good seeds. The white seeds will be white poppies, usually Persian White. They are faster than the others.

If you want P. Somniferum then just check out your local florists or farmers market. You'll find them dried. Make tea and save the seeds. Or funny enough I found packets of Seeds of Change Persians at my local hippy-dippy grocery store.

The poppy flowers themselves are actually quite pretty and easy to grow, though they don't live for very long.

Anyway, papaver somniferum seeds are trivially easy to obtain. You can buy them legally from any number of online retailers, in any variety of colors. I think I've seen them on Ebay, even.

So far as I know, the seeds are perfectly legal to own and the flowers are legal to grow, BUT if you try to extract out any opiates by scoring the capsules, etc then you are probably running afoul of the law.

Opium poppy seeds can be bought in just about any nursery or garden store in the US, under the name common garden poppy. it's legal to grow them, just not legal to scarify them (milk them for sap) or consume anything but the seeds. Personally i would not recommend experimenting with that stuff in any but an ornamental context. have you considered growing tobacco? just about any state in the union can grow tobacco, and the plants are stunning. plus no junkie will trash you garden to chew off a bit of burley.

the california poppy has no use outside ornamental growth, and butterfly attraction.
