i did not see this coming from an incumbent president on a hot button topic during an election year.

thank you, mr. president. it's about damn time.

"I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married”

Don't be so hard on our president. He had to test the political wind to figure out how his "principles" might affect his election chances. Now, if gays were getting married in California medical marijuana clinics his thinking would be different on the issue.

Nice to know he has some backbone and principle. All the more noteworthy because of the hostility of much of the electorate on this issue (eg. North Carolina)

Great. Another calculated political ploy from our Changemeister in Charge. Fuck with the MMJ community right before the election to close a 'soft on drugs' attack avenue? Done. Deny equal rights to millions of Americans for three years because it's not politically potent enough? Gotcha covered. I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF THIS SHIT!

MMJ laws arent going to get him elected look for that in the second term, for now this is one of the best ways to get those extra votes.
