You've used it to flower 4 cycles and claim only 400 hours? Don't you mean closer to 2500 hours? If the average grow flowers for 56 days, at 12 hours a day, that is 672 hours per flower cycle...multiply that my 4 and you're close to 2700 hours....And yeah, I'd replace it.

How have you only used it for 400 hours?

That's between 15 days (at 24/0) and 25 days (at 16/8 ) of veg ... hmmmm.

But after 2000 hours, you'll have lost some luminosity. But not much. cn

Light meters are fairly inexpensive these days. Saves a lot of guessing. An HPS bulb that is not "strong" enough for sativas can possibly serve for indicas or indica dominant strains as they need far less light to mature than sativas or sativa dominant strains.

HPS End-of-Life Voltage
With a number of factors contributing to HPS lamp
voltage rise, the increase in operating voltage over the
life of the lamp becomes significant. The operating
voltage of HPS lamps increases about 1-2 volts per
1000 hours operated. The life of an HPS lamp is
dependent on the rate of lamp voltage rise. Lamp
voltage will rise until it reaches the limit of the ballast
voltage available. At this point, the HPS lamp will cycle
ON and OFF, and its effective life will be over.

Just wanted to share specifically how the death of the bulb works and why it won't get any worse at a point.

Great info info source Moebius.

I don't know why people insist on changing bulbs after 3 cycles, maybe its because they are buying cheap bulbs. 3020 hours on a bulb with a 24k hour life , you're badically throwing away a new damn bulb. I use nothing but hortilux and I'll be damned if I'm throwing out a 140 dollar bulb that's been used for 5-10 percent of its expectancy .
