Wow, still a long time to freefall knowing what's about to happen!
At the same time, only three crewmembers put on their oxygen. I would not be surprised if one was somewhat conscious and helped or put the masks on his two closest cabinmates. The initial explosion crested at 20xG; that's car crash territory. The task of donning emergency oxygen must be one of the most-drilled maneuvers for any one who gets a flight cert. That only three did it suggests to me that they were mercifully out of it, and the half-minute in the stratosphere with very low cabin pressure would have caused death by hypoxia while they were still stunned from the thump. I would be quite surprised if more than one person were aware at the moment when the cabin's altitude zeroed. cn

Do you know if any of the bodies were recovered or what kind of damage they sustained?

How old were you when that happened? What was your first thought?

When the Columbia broke up on reentry in 2003 I was in 10th grade, my biology teacher was furious people were collecting the pieces and trying to sell them on ebay..

Still though, I'd say NASA has a pretty damn good track record given how long it's been around.

Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia are the only major accidents besides jet crashes in 54 years

I would include Apollo 13 in the "major accidents" category.

The way I found out about the Challenger disaster is a story in itself. I'll perhaps post it later. Right now, it's time to hunt dinner. cn

Sounds good bro, good huntin'!
I was in grad school at the time in New Jersey. I'd just spent the weekend in the DC area, where I grew up and my fiancée was still living. Just shy of the midpoint of the drive was a place called White Marsh, a giant mall in the Maryland countryside.
I stopped there to change fluids and stretch myself and maybe do a bit of shopping. I walked in via one of the major department stores and noticed that the store was oddly empty and hushed. This was still when the electronics section of the big stores sold lots of TVs and had a corner of the store where fifty or so sets would be in operation. That's where I found a crowd of subdued people. Every TV screen showed the same thing ... a twisted claw of smoke against an unnaturally blue sky. It was around noontime, so the disaster had just happened.
It was an impressive way to have my own version of that moment those older than I had when they learned that Kennedy had been shot, and a moment whose ... moment would not be matched until the twin towers got hit. cn
