Just because I related impact to hitting the Earth, does not mean that you can't trigger the catalytic reaction in another way. You can start the catalytic reaction required to detonate the warhead in many different ways. My example just happened to be the simplest to talk about on here. Hell you can detonate a nuke underwater.
Furthermore, if you are sending a missile intercontinental, you are most likely going to remotely detonate it.
