3000w Flips My Breaker, What are my options? HELP!

Definetly hire an electrician. LAST thing you want is your room to burn down because of a faulty wiring. I have 3k watts as well, and I had a caregiver friend that was also an electrician setup a 30amp light controller from my flowering room, directly into the electric panel. Its deff worth it.

yeah i already hired the guy, everything is hooked up, I just need to go buy another 1000w bulb to see how everything runs all at once

now your going to have to buy three 220v timers as well at $20 a pop. Unless your going to flip the breaker on and off at the correct time everyday

Dont forget this is your house with personal belongings. Be happy you just had it done right and you can make your money back in few months. Why cheap out when its guarentee the money come back to you.

Just for the record, the options without the subpanel were not "cheaping out" they were actually the more Effeciently, cleaner, and more cost effective approach.

This is simply a case of a little research would have gone a long way. No big deal, in the end the will actually cost the same but the guy at DX hydro builds some sweet ass panels!!

He just hooked me up with an 18k watt panel with two timers, staggered start, temperature protection and hot start prevention for $400

Alright, didnt read most of that information there.. But simply put.

What i previously did was just a 240v/30a timer box. Can run 3-1000's @240v all day safely on that setup. Really 4. I saw you mention a 50a. You could run 8-1000's with the 50a box if i recall correctly.

Good luck cir! Be safe if your doing it yourself. Electricity is not forgiving. Specially 220+. :0

Thank you all for all your advice, I had everything hooked up, all 3000w lights, and they were running good, I had em run for an hour just to see if any breakers would flip or anything crazy happened.. all seemed good.. no burnt smell.. no smoke.. nothing was even getting hot.. I ended up going with a double 40a in my sub panel .. my only concern is the wires I have going to the double 40a.. I got the 3 outlets wired to it, 3 black wires into the top and 3 white wires into the bottom of the double 40a.. now a double 40amp is 80amps altogether = 8000watts or whatever, so Im not over doing it there because Im only pulling 3000w, but am I suppose to have wires tied in like that to the breaker? all seems fine and works great.. but here is some pictures..

so many people freak out about electrical... i find it so simple if you can just do math and realize the physics i work at a home improvement store and ill give you some props for asking people on this site how to figure your electrical out lol.. hope your grow goes SWELL after overlooking this id give it my stamp of approval. Just hope your not overloading your main. GL Bro

Come on man, all the information available to do this job correctly is available on the internet..and not from a MJ growing site. I thought that you had hired someone to do the wiring? At any rate, the way you did it is technically wrong...(three wires into a breaker) but in this instance its not going to hurt anything.

In the future...for all those wiring their grow rooms.. There is only one wire for each circuit and you NEVER have any independant junction boxes in the ceiling or wall. The wire goes to the first outlet then goes from that outlet to the next one, then the next one, etc etc, etc. That's why outlets have multiple set of connectors on the back. One to power the outlet and the other to start the feed to the next one.

the important thing is that you sized the wire correctly and you did so happy growing. How ARE you going to time those things?

I would have run the power feed to a pool timer then hard wired all the outlets to the timer.

whatever, NONE of these ideas were my own, just gathered all the info from people on here helping me...

anywho, One guy said he gave me his STAMP OF APPROVAL, and you say NONE OF IT IS RIGHT

I did have someone do the wiring, they wired the 6 gauge wire from my main box and wired it to my sub panel in my grow room, i then figured out I needed a double pole breaker in my sub panel to make 220, the guy wasnt going to wait around for me to go get the breaker.. so i did that part and the outlets myself.. I think its all good now

Noob here, but dude you can't land #10's on a 40A. I'm not even sure why you ran #10, as you only used 20A receptacles. The only problem with the three wires is the possibility of a bad connection. Three double pull 20's would be a better option all around. You also wouldn't lose power to the entire room if you had a fault.

If the feeders are sized right it doesn't matter, it will trip if it goes over 50A, which it never would. The way he's set up now any one of those #10's could overheat and melt.

The chances that the wire will overheat before the breaker trips is a real time threat in this situation. You are better off, splitting them on 3 seperate 2pole breakers at 30amps each. I would not feel the least bit safe with that m8

Asking me to overlook 1 simple safety violation is asking me to compromise my entire attitude towards the value of your life, and I will never let that happen M8.

Please, split those on some proper breakers and sleep well at night

I don't want to be the negative Nelly here, no, its not done properly, but it will work and the chance of fire is pretty low even though its not up to code. More than anything, this thread is a great example of how people:
A. just launch into something without doing there own homework.
B. Post in a thread giving advice when the really don't know the best answer
C. Want to do it the "right" way then say fuck all and just go with what they have.
