Shit, a 120w incandescent bulb can burn. Does that mean you don't leave the front porch light on for when you come home either?

if anything, this thread has only made me more paranoid.

i now eye the heating pads for my clones with great suspicion and worry. who knows what kind of mischief they're up to as i sleep.

the plus side to my paranoia is that paying someone to monitor the house when i'm away also assures that no one breaks in and steals my lucky charms. or weed.

Why don't you just get a couple flame defenders? I have the smallest one in my tent. I'd like to get a couple more. They're pretty cheap.

flame defenders?

*commence googling*

well hot damn! that seems much easier than the alternative and really would bring peace of mind.

*now googling cost*

and the price is right!

i'd rather have a freak false positive wipe out a crop every now and then rather than ever risk a fire in a grow space.

would rep you if i could. a like will have to do.

Order one online in between naps?
yes deffinitely, id order my grocerys if they delivered (no, none around here does that) and it kinda smells funny around my house, i prefer people maintain a distance. For security reasons. I have very little to fear from the 5o, im good there, but lowlifes could potentially be a problem.

thought i'd see where everyone else is at, especially with the holidays (and probably some traveling) coming up.

i refuse to leave any HID lamps on without being at home (or having someone at home). CFLs can be left on while the house is empty, but never HID lamps.

whenever i have to go out of town, i hire a trusted friend to stay at my house. if i can't find someone who is able to stay over during lights on, i leave the lights off, even if it means a week in the dark. the worst i've had to do so far is 3 days in the dark and it didn't seem to hurt anything.

just wanted to see where everyone else is at on this one.
yes I do but I have these

FYI, the product link was posted on the first page of this thread.

this thread makes me happy because i take safety very seriously and really hope others do too.

one of the things i feel does harm to our community and our cause is a burned down house because of an indoor grow. and it can be any size. a dude just trying to grow a single plant with CFLs could burn down a place just as easy as someone running an intricate and elaborate grow house, but it makes us look just as bad to the rest of the world nonetheless.

and plus, i've got furry critters on the line here. if my hobby took their lives, that would make me feel worse than losing all my possessions and having to write a deductible for a burnt down house.

i sincerely hope that everyone views safety as importantly, if not for themselves than for the overall community.

I have gone away for 4 days and left every thing running. I didn't have anyone stay and if the house burnt down my wife would make me stop growing. match

Interesting thread ,something i have worried about in the past. But i got to thinking and i came up with some conclusion. Grow lights are designed to grow plants indoors.Ok ,now say you were growing a pepper plant or something innocent and you went out and your light burnt your house down.. lawsuit anyone? The manufacturers have to be producing a product that is safe for it's intended use.period.As long as you havent got some rags soaked in gasoline or some shredded newspaper in there ,you are golden.Water getting on the electrics i would say is the number 1 cause growroom fires , and how many people are growing weed around the world... a damn lot of people ,not very many fires i ever hear of ..usually it's a headline cannabis grower burns house down ..i don't see that headline ,ever really now that i think about it.

Damnit!!! Reading this thread made me paranoid to the point that I just ordered a 6kg Flame Defender! And I'm only using T5's!!! And I'm NOT stoned! lol

Seriously, though, I had contemplated ordering one in the past anyway, so why the fuck not? Seems like a relatively cheap way to get some 'peace of mind'. I'd rather deal with cleaning up a closet/room than having the insurance company reject my claim, and/or having to explain to a judge what I was doing in the privacy of my own home that led to the destruction of it.

Also, I too have animal life (birds) living with me that I'd be very upset losing due to my own stupidity or some random unforseable grow incident. I normally run my lights at night when I'm (usually) at home, and I've parsed my grow area (closet) to the minimum possible of flamable materials...the prefilter of the carbon filter, aside from the plants themselves.

This hobby is costing me way more up front than it would cost to buy decent bud from my 'connects' for the next 2 years...lol!!! It's not about the cash, however. It's worth it NOT to have to chase dealers, and deal with the unknown quality of the bud, or the potential that it was treated with something that I wouldn't want to smoke, or that comes from some cartel. Plus I learn how to grow and gain the pride of 'growing my own', even if it's not the most potent herb available. And it's been almost a year since I've had to chase...

Good thread. Thanks UncleBuck!

Never. im very paranoid. plus, dehumidifier buckets must be emptied, mini split bucket must be emptied. my plants get hand fed so they need to be watered at least every other day. if i have to leave i do the same as buck, ask one of the few trusted friends to watch my garden and my dog. even then, i dont trust anyone to know how to water my shit and mix a feed, i wouldnt be able to sleep thinking about what my girls are doing.

if i need to leave for a couple days at a time i try to do it during down time between trimming and vegging out for the next run. i dont have a problem flooding my girls and leaving one 600 on for 2 or 3 days.

If they get too hot?
You do realize that it's not necessary to cool these type of lamps, right? These are the same lamps that run all night long in streetlights, and all day long in warehouses, and they're never cooled.
