Adam Lanza's mother

This question was put out there by a local radio show last night:

If Adam Lanza's mother were alive today, should she be found guilty of anything?

The hosts of the radio show surmised that since she knew her son was mentally ill, should she have had guns in the house to begin with, and furthermore should she have taught him how to use those guns, and would she have been criminally liable for not properly securing those guns that ultimately led to the death of 26 people?

The hosts were not sure what laws were in CT (nor am I), but asked their listeners if there weren't any existing laws dealing with this, should there be?

Apparently she did had a locked gun safe, but as a 20 yr old male that is pretty easy to figure out how to get the key/gain access. Yes, if she was alive she would have been guilty of something, although I'm not sure if it would be murder or accessory, or negligence, or what.

why is it so important to find someone to blame? ...the kid was sick, why isn't that good enough?

...the issue is in how we deal with our mentally ill, and if anyones at 'fault' it's our fault for electing the fools who are responsible for so many of our mentally ill not getting the treatment they need.

...the hosts of that show are liberal fools who are cashing in on this tragedy, they don't actually give two shits about this issue, they only care about ratings!

how do any of us know whether or not she sought treatment for her son? ...or how many times she sought treatment?

...she would be guilty of nothing!

...think about it man, what you're saying is i can go shoot someone and blame my mommy for pete's sake, lol.

Why is it important? I don't know, maybe because 26 people were killed and it may have been something that could have been prevented had she taken proper steps to make sure the guns were secured.

Don't give me this "liberal host" bullshit. If someone wants to own a gun, there is an onus on that person to make certain that their weapon is safe and secure at all times. It kind of comes with the territory, don't ya think?

There is no law that says gun must be secured in your own home. None at all. SHe would be found guilty of absolutely nothing, unless having a child with defects is considered a crime now.

Safe and secure is a subjective term, what is safe and reasonable to you may not be so for me, and since anyone's opinion on this has no force of law I think we should just keep it like that.

If it makes you feel better then enact a law that says all guns must be secured no matter who tries to take them. Then when you find out that it is unenforceable and doesn't change a damned thing except get more people thrown in jail maybe you will come to your senses.

Yeah, I need to come to my senses for believing that there is an expectation for a gun owner to take care of their guns. If you had a dog that you knew bit people, and you allowed the dog to get out of your yard, should you not ultimately be responsible if someone gets hurt or killed?

I guess locking the guns in a safe isn't good enough? Cuz that's where the guns were, they were locked up in a gun vault. Fact, But trying to keep a 20 year old adult who is a science and math genius out of a locked gun vault probably won't work. By the time I was 10 I could get into every safe in the house, every locked room, every locked vault. I knew where the keys were and had memorized all the combinations merely by watching dad manipulate the dial.

This kid wasn't some mentally handicapped individual, he had a very high IQ but had some mental health issue. You know Frederick Nietzsche the famous philosopher, poet, critic and philologist? He died in an insane asylum.

Lets say you have a gun, hidden deep in a safe and I come and liberate that gun through manipulation or physical methods ( I cracked many a safe and vault when employed by Diebold). Would you consider yourself negligent because you didn't have armed guards and a 30 foot reinforced concrete bunker with a safe within a vault inside with your guns all inside the bunker?

What more do you want her to do? Her son was an adult, he wasn't some wacked out, angst ridden, suicidal teen bent for hell, but he was under the influence of mental drugs prescribed by a doctor that have been linked to violent episodic behavior.

But you want to blame mom.

Mom wasn't responsible for her son, her son was a full grown adult.

Have you ever had anything stolen from you?

mom should have taken the liberal sacrament of abortion rather than risk birthing a child who MIGHT someday commit a crime.

So, are you saying that as a gun owner you bear no responsibility for securing your weapons? If that's your premise, then we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

I understand that Adam Lanza was the person who killed those kids. I also understand that those guns were registered to his mother, and it was HER responsibility to keep those guns locked up when SHE wasn't using them. You can trot out any "when I was a kid" scenario you want to, but the fact remains that SHE allowed those weapons to get in to the hands of her son, which ultimately lead to the death of 26 people.

If your 12 year old got a hold of a gun that you left laying around and took it to school and accidentally killed a class mate, would you tell that kids parents and the rest of the world 'hey, don't blame me, I didn't shoot the kid"?

Yeah, lets' abandon all rational dialogue here and take this to the most extreme level of absurdity.

Maybe you can spin this in to a food stamp issue next....

what you seem unable to grasp is the fact that she was dead, D E D dead, hard to expect a dead person to make sure her guns were locked up, ...and i doubt she planned the time of her death so didn't have the foresight to get rid of them before she croaked ...the concept of personal responsibility seems to be to much for you as well.

Yes I have. A gold necklace.

I'd like to think that I'd be bright enough to differentiate between a necklace and a gun though, and take proper measures to ensure that my gun never ended up in anybody's hands but my own.

Hey bozo, how in the fuck do you think she ended up DEAD??

Perhaps due to being shot in the face WITH HER OWN GUN?????????????????????

If I have my gun locked in my vault and somehow an adult comes along and somehow gets it open, you think its reasonable to blame me? A 12 year old would not be able to get into a locked gun vault and the Lanza boy wasn't a 12 year old so your point is MOOT.

Ms Lanza had her guns locked up in a vault. She is BLAMELESS.

You blamed your mother for your necklace being stolen I presume? After all she must not have taught you how to secure it so that when you grew up to be an adult you unknowingly put your necklace in a situation where it could be pilfered. The nerve of your mother!
