Was true... Sometimes I wonder if G-love's plant's were partially NFT- with the taps and taking off once they hit the floor (more water)... tree farmer's roots look more like pure aero roots to me, but G-love aint nuttin to scoff at! Nice of you to share, I've shared mine a few times myself cuz it takes days or weeks to get verified over there...

My version of hydro is not wasteful, in fact it is super efficient, not as efficient as a properly dialed in hpa system, but close enough for me

I feel so stupid - I didn't realize all I had to do was sign up to UK420! I thought the error message I got while searching (no membership) meant his threads had been deleted from the internet...

On the one hand, I feel dumb, on the other hand, I'm much looking forward to the new (to me) reading material!

How big is your 8 plant chamber? Do you have pictures in one of your previous threads?

I have a normal DWC system right now, but despite a bad case of root rot most of my plants will consumer liters of water a day. Two in particular that will drink 3 gallons apiece in 2days. My water consumption is pretty substantial but it's not going to waste. The plants themselves are consuming huge amounts. How is it that a plant can survive let alone thrive in the "ideal" environment most of you describe and with so little water?

I love the idea of HP aero overall. Plus it gives me an excuse to play around with programing. I'm have a lot of questions but I'm still looking through the threads. I've got a interesting idea for a small perpetual SOG setup, but there are still a few kinks I need to work out.

The lava Rock was an experiment to keeo roots from wandering down. I wound up taking it out . Hardly any roots grew down through it, but I wound up pulling this grow due to heat stress flipping all 4 plants to males. Sorry I did not take a photo when the root ball was much bigger

The runoff is the waste, otherwise the plants drink as much as a plant normally drinks... This thread shows my chamber if you go back around October of 2011... You may have lost some water to evaporation off of the waters surface, and you definitely lose some nutes when you change your nutes out, right?

So you are running drain to waste? Epic! I've always been intrigued by the upsides of DTW. I throw out 50 gallons of solution per week in my DWC setups. Even if lose a few gallons per day to runoff, it's more efficient in fertilizer use.

I highly recommend you read at least the first 200 or so posts of this thread, it will really help you out alot, not to mention answer alot of your questions... The info I write from last year is still good and not in need of any updating... Good luck man... :)
 
trichy- I don't lose as much as other people seem to. I'll wait until later in the day when they have consumed most of the water in their buckets. I usually only end up wasting about 10-15 gallons of water a week. I'll use 45-50 to refill all the buckets and an additional 20+ gallons a week feeding them. I'm just in plain old homer buckets though. One of the two plants I mentioned has since recovered and will drink a gallon a day by itself now. I'm sure I lose some to evaporation, but it is such a miniscule loss it would be hard to quantify.

How much water do you guy's end up actually consuming per week? I've read about people who charge their accumulator tank once a week with a manual pump. Ideally I'd like to setup an accumulator with enough pressure and capacity to run seven days. I still want to use an electric pump(I'm lazy), but it would be one less thing to worry about. The way I see it less time messing with water and nutrients, more time working with the plants.

Has anyone successfully kept a mother plant with HPA?

These pumps are quite reliable, the Aquatecs are also very quiet fyi... I am sure some people have kept mothers with hpa, however you usually don't want such vigorous growth and in that regard I would opt for a simpler method for a mother. Perhaps a 5 gallon bucket with promix being watered with hydro nutes will satisfy you like it does for me... A little math and you can size the accumulator properly to last as long as you wish...

I'm not concerned about reliability or noise really.

Couldn't you take healthier clones more often with a mother kept in ideal conditions? Could be useful for someone with a perpetual setup.

True, if you take alot of cuttings- why not... Some people don't need a fast growing mother, that's all I meant to point out. There's no reason a mother wouldn't thrive in HPA in my mind...

I think everyone should address reliability - you wouldn't want to lose all your work over something minor without having any failsafe/backup regime...

The beauty of this setup is that it is safe from pump failures and electrical falure with the 12v battery system and accumulator storing nutes under pressure...
 
TB- I think I should clarify, the reason I'm not overly concerned with reliability is for the reason you mentioned. I like the fact that the entire system(depending on scale and excluding lights) can be run off a simple car battery and a solar panel if desired.

Since there is no finish line so to speak, wouldn't the size of the root system be a concern later in the life of a mother with HPA?

Yes, the roots may become the biggest issue since they grow so quickly with proper aero... Might be the one real reason to avoid it...
 
i always felt accelerating the growth cycle of a mother is not always best i read a bunch of articles about their life and growth cycles, a lot of people claimed the beauty of plant tissue culture was keeping cloning plants in almost stasis and keeps the cloning material inside it's natural cycle i saw a couple sweet vids on u tube with a shelf full of baby food jars with tissue cultures of every species they liked and cloned them at will to a room full of healthy plants. i was so excited , i could just imagine my own species bank of every favorite plant to keep in a sense forever just keep perpetuating the material. it's beautiful!
