Browning edges after major mite infestation. Are the mites the cause?

I had a major mite problem (as you can tell by the leaves) that seems to be under control now. I was also making a few adjustments to my DWC to compensate for a Mg deficiency.

The Mg deficiency seems to be corrected and I have the mites under control. Purple stems I think was caused early on by low temps and just never reversed.

Now I am seeing my leaves start to brown around the edges and tips. Any ideas? Could this be a result of all the mite damage?

Looks to me as if a start of phosphorous deficiency, purple stems also can be genetic and arent a thing to worry so greatly about unless your plant overall looks like shit, purple stems though can also be caused by a phosphorous def, they also turn red dependant on strain as far as ive experimented. Your ppm also seems low, how big are your plants, are they either an indica or sativa or even hybrid? Are the flowering?

I would also second a P deficiency. A P deficiency can also cause similar browning and not only the purple stems. Look at the picture under P deficiency in the link I provide. But would ask how your controlling them as that might contribute to it. Do you know how you got mites? I would always get them by clones from other growers gardens so that's why I grow by seed now, try and keep a clean room, and not where shoes in the grow room or anything that has been outside for extended periods of time. Too bad you have mites cause other than that and the browning leaves they look great.

These poor ladies have had a tough go of it. This is only round one...so I'm learning a lot!

I treated the mites with tobacco/nicotine spray at first. Killed them but i didn't continue long enough to break the cycle. When they came back (pissed off) i had received my cold pressed neem oil and used a mix of that, water, and liquid soap (as directed through several sources). I have been spraying every other day with neem and rinsing them the other days with water. That seems to be when the browning started.

Should i up my ppm? They are 7 weeks into veg but i am sure stunted to all Hell because of all the issues i put them through. Mg def, mites, leaf burn from spraying during lights on, mg def again, and now mites again with this browning leaf issue.

These are a 90% sativa.

One question, have you been applying the Neem oil with the light on? Well from rereading your comment you do, that can also be contributing to leaf problems. When I had Mites I used neem oil and couldn't apply it with the lights on without harming the plant. If you think it's a P deficiency, add more of whatever Nutrient your using that has more P than N or K, no need to raise ppm, just change the ratios of N-P-K to more P heavy.

Best way to get rid of Mites, is to never start with them and take precautions to prevent getting them.

if only 7 in veg u should remove all the mite infected leaves so eggs cant hatch. i assure u the plant will thank u with vigorous growth. plus it will be easier to spray next time

Looks closer to nute burn to me. The tips start out bleached or yellowish and then die back from too much nitrogen. Your PPM was what when you started?

They look sick, very bad mite damage and the mites have control , you will harvest next to nothing and that will smoke up like shit. Start again clean down with bleach then spray miticide everywhere. After that dont walk in the room after you've been gardening outside, walking around bushes ,mowing lawn etc, have a shower change clothes then enter the grow room. Also too much heat increases chances of spidermites.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all but could you help me understand your suggestion a little better.


  1. What would cause the bud to smoke like shit? (If the mites are eradicated well before I enter flowering and I haven't used any chemicals other than organics to clear up the issue)
  2. What is going to impact the yield if I regain plant health? (Are you saying that because of the severity of the leave damage, the plant won't be able to photosynthesize enough to produce? Or is something else?)

P.S. I'm going to make another post regarding using these for cloning. Feel free to chime in.

I've been running between 300-400 ppm for the last two weeks. They are only under T5's right now because my larger space isn't ready to receive plants yet. Otherwise they would be under 600HPS and then 1000HPS during flower. I think the ppm should probably be higher but I had major lockout problems from overcompensating a Mg Deficiency 700% too much ( I have that dialed in now though). I wanted to ease them back into the nutes until I was certain they were doing okay.

ALSO: I recently upped my Epsom from 1/8tsp/gallon to 1/4tsp/gallon. This seemed to correct the Mg deficiency fairly quickly. Could this also be the culprit maybe for the Phosphorus issues?

Mites arent the cause of the browning leaves fools, get some pesticides and wipe those fuckers out, malathion has yet to lose a mite battle, one half str foliar spray, wait 10 minutes, shake plant to get moisture off, spray with normal water, shake plant.

The mites are a problem but they arent causing your necrotic spots on the leaves. It could possible it is light and nutrient burn, having liquids with nutes and such in them and then light magnifying through the water droplets could be just frying your plants, either way my first post still stands as ive dealt with the same situation without mites.
